About DAYWALK
DAYWALK designs and engineers steel transport products for the heavy industry & mining sectors. With operations in Queensland and Western Australia and customers across Australia, our products are built to perform in demanding operating environments, and to be safe, compliant and certified.
The opportunity
DAYWALK's Engineering function operates across three streams: research and development (R&D;); project delivery; and estimation and pre-sales engineering. Reporting to the Head of Operations, this role leads engineering for project delivery and partners closely with the Projects team.
This is a key technical authority role. You will lead mechanical and structural design from concept through to production-ready drawings, back every design with calculations (hand calculations and FEA) and a design risk assessment, and provide RPEQ direct supervision and technical peer review for the engineering team.
The role will suit an engineer who wants genuine design ownership, makes sound technical decisions, and carries issues through from identification to implemented solution.
Key responsibilities
- Lead first-principles mechanical and structural design, from concept and estimate through to production-ready 3D models, weldments and drawings in Autodesk Inventor.
- Design practical, cost-effective fabricated steel structures and assemblies that can be readily and economically manufactured.
- Design to AS 4100, AS 3990 and related standards,
including transport and load restraint requirements where applicable.
- Complete design risk assessments applying safe design principles, and prepare and check certification packages before release.
- Provide RPEQ direct supervision and peer review for the engineering and drafting team.
- Coach and develop engineers and drafters, and lift the technical standard of the team.
- Assess, brief and manage external engineering providers and certifiers, and review third-party designs, calculations and certificates.
- Approve minor design deviations and resolve design issues during production.
About you
You are a practical, technically strong mechanical engineer who is confident operating as a design authority. You combine sound engineering judgement with clear communication, and you take end-to-end ownership of your work.
Essential
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) or equivalent.
- Current RPEQ registration in the Mechanical area of engineering.
- 5 - 10 years' experience in the design of mechanical or structural plant.
- Proven experience designing for metal fabrication (weldments, tolerances, fabricated steel structures).
- Working knowledge of AS 4100 Steel structures, AS 3990 Mechanical equipment – Steelwork and AS 4991 Lifting devices.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD, including weldments and production drawings (Autodesk Inventor preferred).
- Proficiency in FEA,
with the judgement to know when a result is wrong, and strong first-principles hand calculation skills.
- Experience completing design risk assessments.
- Experience supervising and peer reviewing the work of engineers and drafters.
- Experience assessing and managing external engineering providers.
Desirable
- CPEng / NER registration.
- Knowledge of AS/NZS 1554.1 Structural steel welding and AS 1100 Technical drawing.
- Knowledge of load restraint requirements, including the NTC Load Restraint Guide.
- Experience designing transport frames.
- Mining, materials-handling or transport equipment experience (applicants from other sectors are encouraged to apply).
Personal attributes
- Own the Outcome: you bring options, not just problems, and own the quality of your own and the team's work.
- Do What's Right: you deliver on time without skipping the checks that keep products safe, compliant and certified.
- Never Stand Still: you challenge established methods and bring improvement ideas into the R&D; pipeline.
- Say What Needs Saying: you give realistic advice and elevate risks, constraints and capacity concerns early.
- Care Personally: you coach and support the engineers and drafters around you.
What we offer
- Competitive remuneration
- Genuine design authority and end-to-end project ownership
- Technically challenging work across concept, design and production
- Structured onboarding and a strong peer review culture
- Support for RPEQ maintenance and continuing career development
DAYWALK is an equal opportunity employer. Reasonable adjustments to the recruitment process are available on request.
