Coordinator Cyber Defence
Lead with credibility, technical depth and a cooperative approach to cyber defence.
Glen Eira City Council is progressing an ambitious technology transformation, supported by a new four-year Digital and Technology Strategy and significant investment in capability. With the foundations in place, the focus is now on delivering practical improvements that make a lasting difference.
As Coordinator Cyber Defence, you will provide clear, confident leadership of Council's cyber defence capability. Reporting to the Head of Technology & Cyber Defence, you will set direction for day-to-day priorities, guide and support the people delivering the work, and contribute your own technical expertise when it is needed.
Your leadership will extend across Council. You will build trusted relationships with staff and managers, bring the right people together to resolve issues, remove roadblocks and provide senior leaders with practical advice they can act on. You will combine strong technical understanding with the ability to see the bigger picture, guide others and turn priorities into practical outcomes.
About Us
Glen Eira City Council is a great place to work. We have high-performing teams who deliver more than 120 services. Our Employee Engagement Survey results continue to show our people understand their goals, have a strong customer service culture, and are proud to work here. We also know that our community highly values the work we do, because we have some of the highest Community Satisfaction Survey scores of any council in the state.
We strive to be a contemporary, future focused organisation. We are high performing, values based, customer-focused and strive for innovation. In fact, we're in the top ten per cent of most engaged aligned councils, according to our most recent Employee Engagement Survey.
Our municipality is located in Melbourne's south-east suburbs, approximately 10 kilometres from Melbourne's central business district. Glen Eira has a vibrant and diverse community which is proud of its cultural heritage.
It is home to more than 141,000 people and significant Melbourne icons such as Ripponlea, the Caulfield Racecourse Reserve, Yarra Yarra Golf Course, the Jewish Holocaust Museum and much more.
The Opportunity
Your remit will include security monitoring, threat and vulnerability management, incident readiness and response, and the ongoing improvement of security controls. You will determine key priorities, coordinate internal specialists and external providers, and create the clarity and momentum needed to move work through to resolution. When complex issues arise, you will be comfortable getting into the technical detail, making sound calls and helping others determine the best way forward.
The role has broad reach across Council. You will explain cyber risks in straightforward language, provide clear options and recommendations, and guide informed decisions by managers, the executive team and the CEO. By listening, building trust and bringing people together around shared priorities, you will help embed cyber resilience into the way Council works.
About You
You are an experienced cyber security professional and a credible, engaging leader. You bring strong technical capability, but your value goes beyond solving the immediate problem. You set a clear direction, bring people with you and keep sight of the wider context and the outcomes that matter most.
You have led cyber operations, improvement initiatives or incident responses in a complex environment. Others trust your judgement and look to you for clarity, particularly when priorities compete, information is incomplete or the pressure is on.
You communicate with confidence and can coach and support others, challenge respectfully and follow through on commitments.
You are equally comfortable working alongside technical specialists and providing senior leaders with the clarity and context to make informed decisions.
To be successful, you will bring:
- Demonstrated leadership in cyber security operations, improvement initiatives or incident response within a complex organisation
- Strong hands-on technical capability and the confidence to work through complex security issues
- The ability to set priorities, guide others and coordinate providers and stakeholders through to delivery
- The ability to turn technical information into clear advice, options and recommendations for non-technical audiences
- Sound judgement, initiative and the confidence to make decisions, remove roadblocks and maintain momentum
- Strong relationship and communication skills, with the confidence to work with staff, managers and senior leaders
- Knowledge of Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Defender XDR and relevant frameworks including the ACSC Essential Eight, NIST Cybersecurity Framework and ISO 27001/27002
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent professional experience; CISM, CISSP or GIAC certification will be highly regarded
