Senior Data Analyst (Metadata Lead) – Australian Government

Contract · Up to 12 months + extension options · Senior (APS6 equivalent) · Baseline clearance

Location: capital city of QLD, ACT, VIC, SA or TAS, including Cairns and Robina · onsite for the first 6 weeks, then hybrid may be consideredA large Australian Government agency needs a Senior Data Analyst to lead business metadata uplift for its priority datasets, including data used by approved AI projects.

You’ll run the metadata workstream, supervise a team of metadata developers and make sure metadata is consistent, complete and ready for registration.

What you’ll do

Lead the metadata workstream: help set scope, governance, success measures and reporting, prioritise high-value data assets and allocate work to metadata developers.

Track progress, quality, risks, coverage and registration status.

Analyse and curate existing metadata, data warehouse artefacts, data dictionaries, data models, lineage and source-system documentation.

Find gaps, duplication and inconsistent terminology, and harmonise definitions, naming and governance attributes.

Write clear, plain-English definitions and data asset descriptions for business and technical audiences, and quality-review the team’s work.

Work with subject matter experts, data stewards, engineers, analysts and AI project contacts to validate metadata and take it through registration.





Coach metadata developers in ISO/IEC 11179 and agency standards, and support handover to ongoing stewardship.

What you’ll bring

Expertise implementing ISO/IEC 11179 for metadata registries.

Experience leading metadata development, quality assurance or related data management work.

Knowledge of ONDC metadata attributes, National Archives of Australia requirements and DCAT, or the ability to learn them quickly.

Data capability at DCF Level 2 in data communication, data outputs, research questions, statistical analysis and subject matter expertise, and at Level 1 in data integration and visualisation.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance before starting.

Willingness to work at the role location for the full contract.

Advanced Microsoft Excel and project coordination

Experience supervising or coaching staff

Ability to learn agency programs and data landscapes quickly
