About Defence Health

Defence Health is a not-for-profit, purpose-driven private health insurer supporting the health and wellbeing of the Defence community. Since 1953, Defence Health has remained focused on protecting the health of those who protect Australia, operating for members rather than shareholders and reinvesting in the community it serves.

Our culture is values-led, member-focused and built on trust, excellence, community, ownership and putting members first. We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where people are supported to grow, contribute and make a meaningful difference

Defence Health is a place where we are all encouraged to excel and where we strive to be a high-performing organisation by continuously setting a better standard. We show up, stick together, solve it, and see it through.

Our promise to our own people is the same as our promise to members; we look after our own

About the role

We're looking to take an idea, test it with real people, build it, put it into market, learn what works, and then make it better.

We’re looking for a curious, inventive and hands-on Product Lead to help build the next generation of digital propositions for Defence Health.

This isn’t a traditional product or developer role, and we’re not looking for someone who simply wants to manage an established roadmap.

You’ll be joining a small, venture-style team and becoming its founding product lead. You’ll work from concept to delivery, identifying problems worth solving for the Defence community, rapidly testing ideas and then turning the best of them into real digital products.

You’ll have genuine end-to-end ownership. You’ll:

- uncover member problems and turn them into ideas, hypotheses and experiments
- rapidly prototype, test and learn with members and prospects
- design and build mobile experiences across iOS and Android
- use low-code platforms, custom integrations and AI-enabled tools to move quickly
- write and run test scripts and build with security and privacy front of mind, protecting our members’ personal and health information
- launch pilots early rather than waiting for everything to be perfect
- use data and real-world feedback to decide what to scale, change or stop
- own the product beyond launch, continually improving its performance and experience
- help shape the technology, tools and ways of working for a new innovation capability at Defence Health.

About you

We’re looking for someone with a startup mentality and a naturally curious mind.

You’re comfortable starting with a blank page. You can move between understanding the problem, sketching an experience, working through the architecture and getting a working product into somebody’s hands.

You’ll love this role if you:

- love building, not just planning
- are energised by ambiguity rather than frustrated by it
- experiment and learn quickly
- have a robust bias for action
- are willing to challenge assumptions, including your own
- can work autonomously without needing a large team or established playbook around you

- care about the customer problem as much as the technology
- see AI and emerging technology as tools to explore, not just trends to follow.

Technically, you’ll bring experience taking digital products from problem definition through to live release, with hands-on capability across mobile product development, UX, architecture, integrations, testing and ongoing product operation. Experience with enterprise low-code platforms such as OutSystems, AI-assisted development and product experimentation will be particularly valuable.
