We are a dynamic and innovative university, ranked among Australia's leading universities and located in the heart of Sydney's innovation precinct. UTS is seeking a hands-on Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) Advisor to support the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT).

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced safety professional with an engineering, manufacturing, construction, research or technical operations background to work at the heart of teaching, research and innovation. You will partner closely with technical staff, researchers, academics and students to ensure high-risk work is conducted safely, practically and in line with legislative requirements.

About the Team

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology is a dynamic and complex environment comprising workshops, testing laboratories, electrical and robotics facilities, fabrication spaces and industry-partnered research activities.

Working as part of the Health, Safety & Wellbeing team within the People Unit, you will collaborate with academic and professional staff across the Faculty to promote a positive safety culture and ensure effective management of health and safety risks across teaching, research and operational environments.

About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Health, Safety & Wellbeing Partner, you will provide practical health and safety advice, support and guidance across a diverse range of engineering and research environments.

You will spend much of your time engaging directly with staff, researchers and students in laboratories, workshops and technical facilities, helping identify and manage risks, develop safety procedures and support compliance with Work Health and Safety legislation and University requirements. The role combines operational safety support with strategic health and safety initiatives, including incident prevention, training, audits, investigations, safety-in-design reviews and continuous improvement activities.

Key Responsibilities:

- Provide specialist advice and support on engineering and research-related health and safety risks, including plant and machinery, workshops, electrical work, lifting operations, hazardous chemicals, robotics and testing facilities.
- Conduct safety-in-design reviews for new and refurbished laboratories, workshops, research facilities and specialist equipment.
- Support staff and students in developing risk assessments,

safe work procedures and risk mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate and monitor health and safety programs, policies, procedures and compliance activities across the Faculty.
- Conduct workplace inspections, audits and incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and lessons learned are shared.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including emergency wardens, first aiders and workplace emergency arrangements.
- Deliver and coordinate health and safety training programs while supporting ongoing safety capability development.
- Monitor safety performance, prepare reports and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and risk reduction.
- Promote a positive safety culture through consultation, engagement and awareness initiatives.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

- Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience. Engineering qualifications, TAE certification, auditing certification or First Aid qualifications will be highly regarded.
- Demonstrated health and safety experience within engineering, manufacturing, construction, infrastructure, technical operations or research environments.
- Strong knowledge of plant, machinery, workshop, laboratory and electrical safety practices.
- Extensive knowledge of NSW Work Health and Safety legislation, Codes of Practice and relevant Australian Standards.
- Experience developing risk assessments, safe work procedures and practical risk management solutions.
- Strong incident investigation, auditing and inspection experience with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively with academics, researchers, technical specialists and students.
- Experience delivering health and safety training, coaching and advisory services.
