We’re recruiting on behalf of one of our clients, a remittance business registering and operating under AUSTRAC. They need an experienced, locally based MLRO to act as their AML/CTF Compliance Officer.
This is a senior oversight role. You won’t be processing customers all day. The client’s operations team handles customer onboarding and routine compliance administration, supported by an external compliance retainer. You provide the oversight, judgement and accountability that sits above that work.
What you’ll do
Act as the client’s named AML/CTF Compliance Officer and main contact for AUSTRAC
Own the AML/CTF policies, ML/TF risk assessment and procedures under the current AML/CTF Act and Rules
Decide on suspicious matter reports and oversee reporting obligations
Approve high-risk customers, PEPs and escalated cases
Oversee the quality of KYC/CDD, EDD, sanctions screening and transaction monitoring carried out by the operations team
Represent the client in dealings with banks and other financial institutions
Report regularly to the Director on compliance health, issues and remediation
Support independent evaluations and act on findings
Be reachable for urgent matters such as regulator or bank enquiries
What we’re looking for
Based in Australia
Proven AML/CTF experience, ideally in remittance, payments or financial services
Working knowledge of the AUSTRAC regime following the March 2026 reforms
Comfortable dealing directly with regulators and bank compliance teams
Fit and proper, and eligible to be notified as a compliance officer under the current Rules
Able to make decisions and stand behind them
Hours and pay
Hours are versatile and will be agreed once the role is scoped. Reasonable availability for urgent matters is expected. Retainer to be discussed with suitable candidates.
