Graduate Mixed Animal Veterinarian
Macleay Valley Veterinary Services | Kempsey & South West Rocks, NSW
What if you could start your career in genuine mixed animal practice and have the coast as part of the deal?
At Macleay Valley Veterinary Services, you'll get experience across companion animals, cattle and equine practice, while living and working in one of the most beautiful parts of the NSW Mid North Coast.
The current caseload is approximately 70% companion animal and 30% large animal, giving you the chance to build strong everyday medical and surgical skills while still getting out of the clinic and experiencing genuine mixed practice.
For a new graduate who wants variety, practical experience, a supportive team and a lifestyle outside work that's pretty hard to beat, Macleay Valley is well worth a look.
Why Macreay Valley?
One of the things that stands out about Macreay Valley is the way the veterinary team works together.
Rather than operating as individual vets managing their own cases in isolation, the team has traditionally taken a collaborative approach to case management and enjoys learning from each other.
It is a larger veterinary team of 7 vets, which gives a new graduate the opportunity to learn from vets with different experience and interests while finding the areas of practice they enjoy most.
You don't need to know everything on day one. What matters is being willing to ask questions, get involved and keep learning.
A graduate position that lets you explore mixed practice
This is the sort of role where you don't have to choose your veterinary career too early.
You'll have opportunities across:
Companion animal consultations, medicine and surgery
Cattle medicine and herd health
Equine veterinary services
General mixed animal practice
Macleay Valley Veterinary Services provides veterinary care along the Macleay Valley Coast, with services ranging from companion animal care through to cattle herd health and equine work.
You can build strong foundations in companion animal practice while developing confidence and practical skills across large animal cases too.
You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what type of vet you want to become. That's part of what your graduate year is for.
What you'll receive
Above award salary
Relocation assistance
One week paid study leave each year
Veterinary registration paid
Up to $1,000 towards professional memberships and subscriptions aligned with your development plan
Structured graduate development and ongoing CPD
Employee Assistance Program
Staff discounts on veterinary products and services
Retail and travel discounts
Four weeks annual leave
Five days paid volunteer leave
Your working week
After hours shared as one night per week and one in six weekends. This is supported by Apiam's Tele Health Triage team, which answers and filters calls before they reach the veterinarian.
Most importantly for a new graduate, you won't be expected to join the after-hours roster until you are comfortable and ready, and you'll have the support of your team when you do.
When on call, vets receive the applicable award allowance plus 50% of the professional fees charged for each call out.
Life in the Macreay Valley
This might be where Macreay really separates itself from some of our other mixed practice opportunities.
The clinic provides veterinary services along the Macreay Valley Coast, from South West Rocks in the north to Crescent Head in the south.
Outside work, there is surfing, water skiing, fishing and kayaking on the Macreay River, coastal and riverside walks, mountain biking and scuba diving at Fish Rock Cave.
So, if you want to build the skills of a mixed veterinarian but quite like the idea of the beach being part of your life outside work, this is a pretty compelling place to do it.
About you
We're looking for a graduate veterinarian who is excited by mixed practice and genuinely keen to learn.
You don't need to arrive as a confident cattle vet, equine vet and small animal surgeon all at once.
We are much more interested in someone who:
Genuinely wants to experience mixed animal practice
Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a veterinary team
Communicates well with clients and colleagues
Is comfortable asking questions and seeking support
Wants to keep developing their clinical and practical skills
Is ready to get involved in both the clinic and the community
If you're positive, practical, enthusiastic and prepared to get involved, we'd love to hear from you.
Ready to start your veterinary career?
Mixed practice but make the weekends coastal.
Build your companion animal skills. Get out of the clinic and experience cattle and equine practice. Learn alongside an established veterinary team. Then finish the week somewhere you might otherwise choose to go on holiday.
If you're looking for variety in your veterinary career and a lifestyle outside work to match, Macleay Valley could be exactly what you're looking for.
