A young woman sits alone on the kerb, phone dead, friends gone, no idea how she's getting home. Outside a venue, two blokes are squaring up. Down the street, someone's too drunk to stand and not quite sick enough for an ambulance.
Security's job ends at the venue door. Police and paramedics are needed for the emergencies. Everything in between? That's us.
About the role
NightWatch Chaplains work Gladstone's late-night precinct every Friday and Saturday night. We patrol on foot and by vehicle, give first aid, calm things down, help people get home safely, and run NightSafe, a rest-and-recovery space for people whose night has gone wrong.
We're not security and we're not police. We don't judge, lecture or move people on. We look out for people, and we're often the difference between a bad night and a really bad one.
The reality
It's overnight.
Friday and Saturday, 10:30pm to 3:30am, plus public holidays.
It's messy.
You'll care for people who are drunk, high, injured, distressed or angry, sometimes all at once. You'll be sworn at, and you'll clean up vomit.
It can get dangerous.
Now and then you'll walk towards a situation everyone else is walking away from. Some nights are quiet; others bring a cut from a broken glass, a mental health crisis and a fight talked down, all in one shift.
It's heavy.
You'll care for people who are hard to care for, at the end of your week, at the worst moment of their night. Some of what you see will stay with you.
How we've got your back
You patrol as part of a team, on radio, with our Communications Centre coordinating every patrol.
You work alongside venue security, police and paramedics,
not instead of them.
Paid training before you hit the street, and ongoing professional development.
Debriefing, a free EAP, and pastoral care after the hard nights, from people who've done these shifts themselves.
5 weeks of annual leave per year.
Why it's worth it
You'll see the difference you make, every shift: someone gets home protected, a fight doesn't happen, someone having the worst night of their life isn't alone in it.
Last year our Gladstone team helped 2,985 people. Every one of them was someone's daughter, son, mate or partner.
It's real frontline experience, and valuable if you're heading into nursing, paramedicine, policing or youth work.
What you'll do
Patrol the precinct on foot and by vehicle, spotting trouble early and stepping in
Give first aid, from cuts and falls to people who are unconscious, until paramedics arrive or so they're not needed
Calm people who are agitated or aggressive before things escalates
Help people who are lost, alone or unsafe find their friends, a ride home or a safe place
Care for and monitor guests in NightSafe
Take your turn in our Communications Centre, coordinating patrols with venues and emergency services
Work alongside venue staff and security, taxi drivers,
council workers, buskers and emergency services
What you'll need
Availability on Friday and Saturday nights (10:30pm–3:30am) and public holidays
A current First Aid Certificate, or ability to get one within a month of starting
A Blue Card (Working with Children Check), or be able to get one before you start
A national police check
Australian citizenship or permanent residency
An understanding of Christian principles and values and a chaplaincy approach, and the ability to apply them on the street. You don't need to share our faith, but you'll represent a Christian chaplaincy, so you need to understand it and be comfortable working within it.
Calm judgement under pressure, working within our policies and procedures as part of a small team
The ability to work well with people from every walk of life, and basic computer skills
What we offer
Competitive salary for hours worked, starting employees at SCHADS 2.4
Paid training and ongoing professional development
Debriefing and pastoral care after hard nights
A small, tight team, backed by NightWatch's experience on Queensland streets since ****
