Job Title - Combat Systems Engineer (Requirements/FPS)
Job Id 1264564

- Security Clearance: NV1 Clearance
- Length of Contract: 4 months
- The role closes on 03/11/2026
- Location: ACT

Summary
The Combat Systems Engineer supports the DDG Combat System Modernisation effort by developing functional performance specifications (FPS) for combat system and platform-interface subsystems, and provides direct support to the Requirements Manager across requirements capture, allocation, traceability, and change control through System Requirements Review, PDR, and CDR milestones.
Key Responsibilities:

- Develop, review, and maintain functional performance specifications for Aegis Baseline 9 combat system elements and associated platform interfaces (combat management system, sensors, weapons interfaces, Australian Tactical Interface), ensuring traceability to RAN operational requirements.
- Decompose Commonwealth and stakeholder requirements into measurable, testable functional and performance parameters suitable for design and verification.
- Support the Requirements Manager in maintaining the requirements baseline in the program's requirements management tool (e.g. DOORS), including verification cross-reference matrices and formal change control.
- Coordinate with Lockheed Martin Australia (Combat System Design Agent heritage), Navantia Australia (Platform Systems Designer), and Saab Australia on interface requirements, platform growth margins (weight, power, cooling), and system integration constraints.
- Support System Requirements Review, Preliminary Design Review, and Critical Design Review activities, including physical configuration audits and Technical Data Pack inputs.

- Identify and resolve requirement conflicts or gaps between combat system and platform design; document rationale for derived requirements.
- Support verification and validation planning, defining acceptance criteria tied to functional performance specifications ahead of test and trials phases.
- Maintain configuration control of specification documentation per program and Commonwealth documentation standards.

Required Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
- Experience writing functional/performance specifications for complex naval or electronic systems.
- Working knowledge of requirements decomposition, traceability, and verification methods; familiarity with DOORS.
- Strong technical writing and cross-functional communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Prior experience on Aegis Combat System programs, RAN platform upgrades, or major naval integration projects.
- Familiarity with NSSG / CASG documentation standards and acquisition processes.
- Experience working within a multi-prime industry team (Lockheed Martin, Navantia, Saab, or equivalent).

Work Environment
Office/lab-based with periodic travel to Osborne Shipyard, Fleet Base East (Sydney), and combat system integration facilities.

SFIA Skills Sought:
The planning, design, management, execution and reporting of tests, using appropriate testing tools and techniques and conforming to agreed process standards and industry specific regulations.

The purpose of testing is to ensure that new and amended systems, configurations, packages, or services, together with any interfaces, perform as specified (including security requirements) , and that the risks associated with deployment are adequately understood and documented. Testing includes the process of engineering, using and maintaining testware (test cases, test scripts, test reports, test plans, etc) to measure and improve the quality of the software being tested.

TEST Level 4:
Accepts responsibility for creation of test cases using own in-depth technical analysis of both functional and non-functional specifications (such as reliability, efficiency, usability, maintainability and portability). Creates traceability records, from test cases back to requirements. Produces test scripts, materials and regression test packs to test new and amended software or services. Specifies requirements for setting, data, resources and tools. Interprets, executes and documents complex test scripts using agreed methods and standards. Records and analyses actions and results, and maintains a defect register. Reviews test results and modifies tests if necessary. Provides reports on progress, anomalies, risks and issues associated with the overall project. Reports on system quality and collects metrics on test cases. Provides specialist advice to support others.
