MAKO is an aerospace technology company focused on improving the efficiency of the global aviation fleet by bringing our shark-skin-inspired drag reduction product, Flightfilm, to commercial and defense aircraft. Flightfilm can deliver up to 4% efficiency gains, reducing carbon emissions by millions of tonnes every year. Founded and headquartered in Sydney, Australia, MAKO works with some of the largest airlines and aircraft manufacturers worldwide to deliver scalable, near-term efficiency gains for aviation that bridge the gap between today's operating fleets and the next generation of aircraft technologies.
Your Mission
MAKO's mission is to improve the efficiency of the global aviation fleet. That means billions saved in fuel and megatonnes of CO2 every year.
You'll own how Flightfilm gets onto aircraft: the process, the people, the paperwork, the standard. You'll be MAKO's technical face to our customers' engineering teams. And when something needs solving on the hangar floor, our installers look to you.
Pack a bag. This role travels ✈️
What You Will Do
- Lead the installation, quality assurance and maintenance of Flightfilm on aircraft around the world
- Build and run processes that meet the requirements of maintenance organisations and aviation regulators
- Run operational projects end to end. Answer customer queries rapid, track progress, measure impact, and escalate early so milestones land on time
- Train and mentor team members and stakeholders in installation techniques, quality checks, and maintenance kits
- Own the relationships with technical counterparts at our customers. Learn their processes, and keep us compliant with them
What Success Looks Like
First month. You'll get to know the team, our processes and our values: Lift Over Drag, Active Transparency, and Changing the Boundary Conditions. You'll learn the Flightfilm installation process inside out and map the people who matter, both in our customers' organisations and in our own technical functions
First six months. You're coordinating live Flightfilm installations, holding the line on every quality standard. You're the go-to person for any technical response we need
First year.
You'll build the capacity and processes to install Flightfilm at forecast volumes. That means coordinated manuals, trained installers and QA personnel, provisioned stock and safety equipment, and complete training and traceability records
About You
- Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related discipline
- 5+ years managing and coordinating teams in aviation. Start-up or scale-up experience is a bonus
- Experience in a technical, customer-facing role such as field engineering or technical services
- Experience working with aviation MROs
- Happy to travel often. Just as comfortable in a hangar as in a customer's engineering review
Where You Might Be Coming From
This role doesn't have one obvious feeder title, so don't rule yourself out because yours doesn't match ours. You might be leading a team in technical services or technical operations at an airline, or be a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer (LAME or A&P;) who has run shifts or crews. You could be managing base or line maintenance, quality or planning at an MRO, leading in fleet or continuing airworthiness engineering, or a senior field service engineer or representative at an aerospace OEM or supplier who has led installation teams. Whatever your path, you've led people, not just projects. If you've done that on the hangar floor and held your own in the engineering office, we want to hear from you.
Why You Should Join MAKO
Problems worth solving
Aviation has a burning fuel problem. The sector burns US$261 billion worth of fuel and emits a billion tonnes of CO2 in the process, yet the necessary decarbonisation technology levers are decades away, and emissions will continue to grow.
MAKO’s mission is to improve the efficiency of the global aviation fleet by delivering emissions reduction without the associated ‘green premium’.
What we offer is comparable to new jet engines, but invisible and 100x cheaper. We will make every plane burn less fuel, fly further, faster, and carry more.
MAKO is vertically integrated, meaning we design and develop our product, manufacture it, define the application methodology, and handle support. That means the work you do here goes directly into a product on a real aircraft.
Technology worth mastering
Our vertically integrated structure allows us to break down silos between teams, exposing each and every MAKO team member to expertise and developments in materials science, optics, fluid dynamics, and scale manufacturing. UNFINISHED
Values worth holding
The MAKO team collectively enacts our Values of ‘Lift over Drag’, ‘Active Transparency’, and ‘Change the Boundary Conditions’. These are not corporate platitudes – at MAKO, you’ll see firsthand how our Values drive decision-making, unblock communications, and provide clarity in ambiguous situations, helping us to outperform industry incumbents many times our size.
Benefits worth realizing
We offer flexible working arrangements so you can balance your work with your life outside the office. Our Sydenham offices boast an attractive location next to public transport and within a short walk to food and dining options. Each month, the team gets together for activities and social events, which helps us stay connected as we grow. You will also have access to our Employee Benefit Program and our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which gives you and your family free, confidential support when you need it.
Application Process
Apply with your CV and a short cover note. Our process includes a screening call, an interview with the hiring manager, a short take-home case study and overview session, and a final panel interview with our leadership team. We aim to move from application to offer within four to five weeks, and we’ll keep you updated at every stage.
MAKO is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from every background. Careers rarely fly a direct route, so if you're close but not a perfect match, apply and tell us why.
