Lead finance for a national sport, and build it from the ground up
More than 800,000 Australians take part in gymnastics every year. Behind them is Gymnastics Australia, the national governing body supporting 500+ member clubs, 6,500+ coaches and judges, and athletes all the way to the Olympic Games.
We're creating a new executive role to lead a newly established Finance department. As our first Chief Financial Officer, you'll set the foundations for the sport's long-term financial sustainability as we work towards INSPIRE 2032 and our vision of an inspiring gymnastics experience for every Australian.
The role
Reporting to the CEO and sitting on the Executive Leadership Team, you'll be the executive lead for the Board's Finance and Audit Committee, with direct access to the Committee Chair. You'll oversee an organisation-wide budget of around $12-14m and:
- Build and lead the Finance team, setting clear roles, standards and a disciplined monthly rhythm
- Develop a rolling four-year financial plan aligned to INSPIRE 2032, with scenario modelling of strategic choices
- Deliver timely monthly management and Board reporting, and lead the annual budget and external audit
- Design and test strong internal controls, and keep delegations, policies and compliance (GST, FBT, payroll tax and more) on track
- Manage relationships with the Australian Sports Commission and other funders, including grant acquittals
- Lead shared financial services with State and Territory Associations within our federated model
- Partner with Commercial to grow and diversify revenue beyond membership and government funding
- Lift financial literacy so budget owners across the organisation understand and own their numbers
- Give the CEO and Board independent, evidence-based advice, including being clear when something isn't affordable
About you
You're a CA or CPA with tertiary qualifications in accounting or finance, and significant senior finance leadership experience reporting to a CEO and Board or Board committee. You'll also bring:
- A proven record of establishing or uplifting a finance function (controls, month-end discipline, reporting quality)
- Experience managing diverse income streams such as government grants, membership, commercial and event revenue
- Strong commercial judgement, financial modelling and scenario planning skills
- The ability to explain complex financial information clearly to non-financial people
- A track record of building high-performing teams
It would be outstanding if you also have experience in a sporting, member-based, federated or not-for-profit organisation, GAICD or an equivalent governance qualification, Xero experience (including integration with membership platforms), and a love of sport.
A rare chance to shape a finance function and a national sport's financial future from day one
- Hybrid and flexible working from our office in Melbourne's Albert Park sports precinct
- A values-led team built on collaboration, excellence and respect
- Genuine commitment to learning, development and growth opportunities
- Some evening and weekend work will be needed to support Board activity and the delivery of our sport.
Gymnastics Australia is committed to the safeguarding of children and young people. The successful applicant will need a valid Working with Children Check and a satisfactory National Police Check, and referees will be asked about suitability to work with children.
