The Senior Java Developer will provide technical leadership within Services Australia development teams, leading the design, development, testing and maintenance of enterprise Java/J2EE and Angular applications. The role oversees software development activities, ensures the quality and functionality of the software produced, and delivers high-quality solutions within the agency's technical environments and systems.

Key duties and responsibilities

Duties may include:

- design, develop and maintain back-end services using Java, Spring Boot and related frameworks.
- build responsive, dynamic and accessible front-end interfaces using modern frameworks.
- write clean, maintainable and testable code following best practice.
- provide specialist technical advice on software development and maintenance, driving continuous improvement in code quality standards and the long‑term maintenance of the code base.
- lead analysis, design, development, prototyping, unit testing and maintenance activities, solving complex technical problems.
- manage application releases and ensure go‑live production support and maintenance of the team's developments.
- perform high‑level analysis of technical requirements to support project evaluation with proposed solutions.
- undertake technical design and development of highly complex custom solutions and/or standard conversion and migration solutions.
- provide support to development teams to ensure compliance with endorsed software development methodologies.




- share knowledge and provide coaching and mentoring to less experienced colleagues.
- design, build, test and support technical outcomes across the Government SDLC, and own delivery outcomes.

Knowledge/Qualifications

- Minimum 5 years experience in the technologies listed above
- Proven record of delivering IT solutions using software development life cycle, systems development and testing methodologies in an agile workplace.
- Ability to develop technical documentation and broad experience with technical integration frameworks.
- Highly developed communication skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts to a non‑technical audience with experience communicating with internal and external stakeholders
- Relevant tertiary qualification in information technology, software engineering, computer science or equivalent industry experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise software development lifecycle practices, quality assurance and release management.
- Knowledge of Australian Government security, privacy and accessibility expectations for ICT systems is desirable.
- Relevant industry certifications in Java, cloud, Agile or DevOps practices are desirable but not mandatory.

- Senior level experience with Spring Boot, microservices, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, DevOps tooling or containerised deployment patterns.
- Experience working with Australian Government systems, security requirements, accessibility standards or large‑scale service delivery platforms.
- Experience supporting application maintenance and support activities for critical business systems.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with business, technical and operational stakeholders.
