About The Role

Fivecast is seeking a Senior AI Engineer to work closely with the engineering team to scope, design, document, develop, integrate and test software for a large web-based application. In this senior role, you will build software components in Java and help introduce generative AI and agentic AI capabilities into software products. You will contribute across the development lifecycle, from exploring requirements and technical approaches through implementation, testing and deployment.

You will also coach a small team of developers, support high-quality delivery and help guide the adoption of AI practices. The role suits an experienced engineer who can balance hands-on development with technical leadership, communicate clearly and make sound decisions in a collaborative environment. Australian citizenship is required because the position requires eligibility to obtain an NV1 Defence security clearance.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, software engineering, computer science or a related discipline.
- At least 10 years of experience in software engineering or technology development.
- Demonstrated experience implementing generative AI and agentic AI solutions in software products.
- Knowledge of current AI developments and best practices, with the ability to help lead AI adoption within a development team.
- Experience with Java, software engineering practices, data storage technologies and data modelling.




- Familiarity with technologies such as PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, AWS, HTML and CSS, and frameworks such as React, Angular and Spring.
- Strong problem-solving, organisation and delivery skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication and technical documentation skills, including experience with UML.
- Australian citizenship and eligibility to obtain an NV1 Defence security clearance.

Responsibilities

- Design, implement, integrate and test robust Java software components that address end-user needs.
- Develop and incorporate generative AI and agentic AI capabilities into software products, applying appropriate engineering practices.
- Assess relevant AI developments and share practical guidance that supports responsible, effective adoption across the team.
- Work with data storage technologies, including PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch, and design data models suited to application requirements.
- Contribute to web application development using front-end technologies and frameworks such as HTML, CSS, React and Angular, alongside Spring-based services.
- Deploy and manage applications in a cloud environment, such as AWS.
- Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to clarify requirements, document designs and deliver integrated solutions.
- Coach a small team of developers, promote code quality and support timely delivery of software components.
