If you want to be a chef, the best place to learn is a real kitchen during a real service. This is a full time apprenticeship with an established, family-run pub and bistro in Wentworth, about half an hour from Mildura. You’ll join a small kitchen team, cook lunch and dinner service alongside experienced kitchen staff, and finish your Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.
Already a 2nd or 3rd year apprentice? Before you start, we’ll go through your completed units and service with your training provider so you pick up where you left off. Just starting out? 1st years with a genuine commitment to the trade are welcome too.
What you’ll be doing
- Prepping ingredients and setting up your station before service
- Cooking and plating meals using a range of cooking methods, to the venue’s recipes, portions and presentation standards
- Receiving, rotating and storing stock, and following food safety, hygiene and allergen procedures
- Using knives and kitchen equipment safely
- Helping out with customer service and getting meals out when needed
- Going to trade school and completing your assessments (paid)
Your duties grow as your skills and confidence do.
About You
- You'll have a real commitment to becoming a qualified chef and finishing your apprenticeship
- Reliability, because a small kitchen can’t run service one cook short
- The ability to work as a team when service gets busy
- A polite, friendly manner with customers
- Availability for a Tuesday to Saturday roster, including split shifts and evenings
- Your own way to get to Wentworth and to trade school
In a small kitchen you get your hands on everything, not just one section. You’ll finish with a nationally recognised trade qualification and years of real service behind you, and that combination gets chefs hired anywhere.
How we look after you
- We employ you through our own VRQA accredited group training organisation and place you with the venue
- We look after your wages, super, training contract and training plan
- Your Prestige consultant checks in regularly and reviews your progress throughout your apprenticeship
- We work with your training provider to keep you on track, and step in early if something isn’t working
- You’re paid under the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020, plus applicable penalties, allowances and overtime
If you’re reliable, motivated and ready to learn, we’d like to hear from you.
