Education Assistant / Pre-Service Teacher
Hensman Street Elementary | South Perth
Hensman Street Elementary (HSE) is looking for a warm, enthusiastic and proactive Education Assistant / Pre-Service Teacher to join our small and innovative learning community.
This position would suit an Experienced Education assistant or a pre-service teacher currently completing a teaching degree who is looking for meaningful, hands-on experience in a school while developing their skills and understanding of contemporary teaching practice.
We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children, brings positive energy to the school day and is interested in play-based, inquiry-led, inclusive and neurodiversity-affirming education.
At HSE, relationships come first. We want someone who will take the time to know our children, recognise their individual strengths and needs, and work alongside our teaching team to help every child feel safe, connected and able to participate in learning.
About the Role
The Education Assistant / Pre-Service Teacher will work alongside teachers to support children across our multi-age learning environment.
This is not a role where you will simply wait to be given the next task.
We are looking for someone who demonstrates initiative, notices where support is needed and confidently becomes part of the learning happening around them.
Depending on your experience and stage of study, you may have opportunities to take increasing responsibility for learning experiences under the guidance of our teaching team.
Your role may include:
- Supporting individual students and small groups during learning experiences.
- Working alongside teachers to support play-based and inquiry-led learning.
- Supporting neurodivergent students using strengths-based and neurodiversity-affirming approaches.
- Helping students with regulation, transitions, communication, organisation and participation.
- Supporting differentiated learning activities based on individual student needs.
- Observing children's interests, strengths and learning and sharing these observations with teachers.
- Preparing learning materials, resources and environments.
- Supporting outdoor, community and place-based learning experiences.
- Participating in HSE's offsite learning program.
- Supporting positive relationships and interactions between students.
- Assisting children to develop independence rather than simply completing tasks for them.
- Working collaboratively with teachers,
other Education Assistants and the broader HSE team.
- Contributing ideas and bringing your own interests, skills and creativity to our learning community.
About You
You might already be an experienced Education Assistant, or you might be studying to become a teacher and looking for a school where you can develop genuine experience alongside your university studies. HSE is a small school, and because of this, every member of our team plays an significant role. We want our Education Assistants to be active participants in learning.
You won't spend your entire day sitting beside one child completing worksheets
Either way, we are looking for someone who is kind, capable, curious and willing to get involved.
You will ideally:
- Be studying towards a recognised teaching qualification or hold relevant Education Assistant qualifications and/or experience.
- Have experience working with children.
- Have an interest in working with neurodivergent children and diverse learners.
- Understand, or be willing to learn about, neurodiversity-affirming practice.
- Be interested in play-based and inquiry-led approaches to education.
- Be patient, calm and able to build trusting relationships with children.
- Be flexible and comfortable working in a learning environment that may look different from a traditional classroom.
- Have strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Be reliable, organised and professional.
- Be willing to learn, reflect and receive feedback.
- Show initiative and recognise what needs to be done without always needing to be directed.
- Be comfortable getting involved in outdoor, active and community-based learning.
Experience supporting children with Autism, ADHD, PDA profiles, anxiety, sensory differences, regulation differences or other additional learning needs would be highly regarded.
For pre-service teachers, this provides a valuable opportunity to see teaching and learning from the inside—to develop relationships with children, observe experienced educators, practise different approaches and build confidence before entering the profession.
