Senior Grader

Sumich is seeking a Senior Grader to lead our Day Shift onion grading team. This role reports to the Line Supervisor and is ideal for someone who understands product quality standards, enjoys working with people, and feels confident operating in a busy packhouse environment. This is a hands-on, physically demanding role – the successful applicant must be able to climb stairs and remain on their feet throughout the shift.

The onion season begins in mid-January, and typically runs until mid to late October.

Key responsibilities

- Supervising and coordinating all Day Shift graders

- Training new graders in product quality standards

- Allocating graders to correct positions, then managing rotation

- Overseeing cleaning of the main line and grading tables

- Conducting retail product quality checks and other quality inspection tasks

- Grading onions when other duties are complete

- Supporting the Line Supervisor as required

- Strong understanding of produce grading and quality standards

- Ability to lead a diverse team, communicate with a culturally diverse team, and maintain a positive culture.

- Positive, proactive approach to training and teamwork

- Good organisational skills and strong attention to detail

- Ability to follow work instructions and complete paperwork to a high standard

Previous experience

- Proven ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing situations

- Demonstrated reliability and consistency in previous roles

- Experience working in a team-based, fast-paced workplace

- Valid Australian work rights

- Food industry or quality inspection experience is advantageous but not essential

- Awareness of food safety standards would be well regarded
