This is an opportunity for a lawyer with 2-4 years' PQE to join an established in-house legal team in a role offering interesting competition and consumer law work, solid mentorship and genuine commercial exposure.
The role would suit a lawyer who wants to develop their technical expertise, move closer to commercial decision-making and work alongside experienced senior lawyers.
Why is this a great role?
As a Competition & Consumer Lawyer, you will work as part of a collaborative and well-established in-house legal team that provides strategic and commercial advice to the wider business.
You will develop your legal and commercial skills through exposure to a range of competition, consumer protection, regulatory and advisory matters.
This role is attractive because you will have responsibility and the opportunity to influence commercial outcomes, while working closely with senior lawyers who can provide mentorship and support.
The position also offers hybrid working arrangements, combining time in the Sydney office with working from home.
How will this role develop your career?
You will work closely with experienced competition and consumer lawyers, developing your technical skills while gaining exposure to the commercial considerations behind legal decisions.
For a private practice lawyer, this is a strong pathway into an in-house role because it offers direct exposure to business stakeholders, commercial strategy and decision-making.
For an existing in-house lawyer, the role offers the opportunity to deepen your specialist expertise, take greater ownership of matters and develop your skills as a trusted commercial adviser.
Why do lawyers like working here?
The legal team offers a collaborative and supportive environment,
with access to experienced lawyers who provide guidance and mentorship.
Lawyers have the opportunity to work on interesting legal matters, build relationships with stakeholders and see how their advice influences commercial decisions.
There is also a focus on professional development, with opportunities to build both technical expertise and broader commercial skills.
What work will you do?
In addition to the broader responsibilities above, you will:
- Provide legal advice on competition and consumer law matters, including the Competition and Consumer Act and Australian Consumer Law;
- Advise on regulatory compliance, commercial arrangements and competition risks;
- Support regulatory investigations, disputes and engagement with regulators;
- Assist with contentious and non-contentious competition and consumer matters;
- Work closely with internal stakeholders to provide practical, commercially focused advice;
- Monitor relevant legislative and regulatory developments; and
- Work alongside senior lawyers and external counsel on complex legal matters.
What type of person will be successful?
- Admitted as a solicitor in Australia;
- Approximately 2-4 years' PQE, ideally gained in competition, consumer or regulatory law;
- Experience from a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal team;
- Sound knowledge of the Competition and Consumer Act and Australian Consumer Law;
- Strong legal drafting, analytical and advisory skills;
- A commercial mindset and the ability to provide practical, business-focused advice;
- Confidence communicating with stakeholders at different levels of seniority;
- A collaborative approach, sound judgment and a willingness to learn; and
- Experience dealing with competition or consumer regulators would be advantageous.
