About us

The General is a contemporary café at the Cullen Bay end of Mitchell Street, set in a beautifully renovated historic building. We serve breakfast, lunch and specialty coffee made with locally sourced ingredients, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options.

Next door, our deli stocks quality smallgoods and produce, perfect for a waterfront picnic at sunset. We are a busy, well-loved local spot, and we are growing our team.

We are looking to fill the following positions:

•Cook

•Barista

•Hospitality Worker

1.Cook

Employment type: Full time

Salary: $66,000– $76,000 per annum + superannuation

Duties and responsibilities

•Prepare and cook breakfast and lunch dishes to a consistently high standard

•Maintain quality, portion control and presentation standards

•Enforce food safety standards and sanitation regulations

•Work closely with other kitchen, barista and front-of-house staff

•Bring knowledge and skills to the workplace to improve kitchen operations

•Determine inventory needs, and assist with stocking and ordering

•Assist with menu development and the creation of quality dishes, including vegan and vegetarian options

•Keep the kitchen, equipment and work areas clean and organised

•Follow workplace health and safety procedures and guidelines

What we are looking for

•At least 1year of experience in a commercial kitchen

•Ability to work efficiently under pressure during peak periods

•Flexibility to work a roster that includes weekends

2.Barista

Employment type: Full time

Salary: $66,000– $76,000 per annum + superannuation

Duties and responsibilities

•Prepare espresso-based and specialty coffee, iced coffee and other beverages to a consistently high standard

•Present drinks using up-to-date techniques and presentation standards

•Enforce food safety standards and sanitation regulations





•Work closely with other baristas and staff at all levels

•Bring knowledge to the workplace to help improve operating standards

•Determine inventory needs, and assist with stocking and ordering

•Clean and maintain the coffee machine, grinders and coffee station

What we are looking for

•Strong knowledge of espresso extraction and milk texturing

•Friendly, customer-focused attitude

•Flexibility to work a roster that includes weekends

3.Hospitality Worker

Employment type: Full time

Salary: $66,000– $76,000 per annum + superannuation

Duties and responsibilities

•Greet customers and provide friendly, effective service at the counter and in the dining area, especially during busy breakfast and lunch periods

•Take dine-in and takeaway orders and process payments using the POS system

•Answer menu questions and help customers with dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian and allergen information

•Run food and drinks to customers accurately and promptly, making sure each order reaches the right table

•Serve customers at the deli counter, including slicing, weighing, wrapping and pricing smallgoods and other deli products

•Prepare and pack takeaway and picnic orders

•Assist baristas with cold drinks and keep the coffee station stocked during peak periods

•Clear, clean and reset tables, and keep the dining area, counters and deli displays clean and presentable

•Set up the café and deli before opening and pack down after close

•Restock, rotate stock and check use-by dates, and label and store café and deli products correctly

•Communicate with the kitchen and barista team to keep orders flowing smoothly

•Follow food safety, hygiene and workplace health and safety procedures

What we are looking for

•Previous experience in a café, restaurant or deli

•Ability to stay calm and organised during busy periods

•Food safety or food handling training (desirable)

•Flexibility to work a roster that includes weekends
