Grow your Azure data engineering experience in a flexible, hands-on contract role.
Your new company
Our client is seeking to engage a mid-level Data Engineer to join its Business Intelligence and data team on a short-term contract. With an established enterprise data warehouse environment already in place, the team is looking for an additional Data Engineer to support delivery through to the end of the year.
This is a hands-on development role suited to someone with around 2-3 years of data engineering experience who is comfortable working within an established team, taking direction from a Senior Data Engineer and owning allocated technical tasks through to completion.
The role offers a hybrid working arrangement, with the flexibility to work from their Sippy Downs or Petrie offices 2 to 3 days per week.
Your new role
Working closely with the Senior Data Engineer and wider BI team, you'll help develop and maintain data solutions across an Azure-based environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing SQL stored procedures, tables, views and data transformations
- Building and maintaining ETL/ELT processes across multiple source systems
- Developing scalable data pipelines using Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Data Factory
- Applying Kimball dimensional modelling and medallion architecture principles
- Supporting the ongoing development of an established enterprise data warehouse
- Preparing and executing unit, integration and data reconciliation testing
- Using Python for data engineering, transformation and automation activities
- Troubleshooting and optimising pipelines and data integration processes
- Maintaining explicit technical documentation covering transformations, business rules, testing and handover
- Working collaboratively with the broader team while independently delivering assigned development tasks
What you'll need to succeed
We're looking for someone who has approximately 2-3 years of hands-on data engineering experience and is comfortable getting into the technical detail.
You'll ideally bring:
- Hands-on experience with Azure Synapse Analytics
- Experience developing pipelines using Azure Data Factory
- Strong SQL skills, including stored procedures, complex queries, views and data transformations
- Practical Python experience in a data engineering environment
- Experience with ETL/ELT and data integration
- Knowledge of Kimball dimensional modelling
- Understanding of medallion architecture
- Experience working with enterprise data warehouses
- Exposure to data warehouse testing, including unit, integration and data validation testing
- Good communication and collaboration skills
- The ability to take direction and independently deliver allocated technical work
- Experience with Azure Databricks would be beneficial but isn't essential.
- Experience with higher education data, student datasets or student lifecycle reporting would also be advantageous.
What you'll get in return
This is a great short-term opportunity for a developing Data Engineer to gain further experience in an established enterprise data environment without needing to step into a senior or lead-level position.
You'll get:
- Exposure to an established enterprise data warehouse
- A collaborative BI and data team environment
- A short-term engagement through to the end of 2026
