Hey I’m Kaveh, Head of Engineering at Updoc. Everyone has a story about how messy healthcare is in Australia; and at Updoc we’re building the digital future of healthcare so it never has to be that way again.
There are too many cool things about working at Updoc to mention in one job ad, but I’ll try my best anyway We’re profitable, we’re growing, we’re backed by leading Australian investors, we’ve won numerous awards for being one of the best places to work by our team (AFR Best Places to Work 2024 & 2025), and so much more.
About the role
Engineering at Updoc handles the requirements of a high growth start-up and the security, privacy, and reliability requirements of the Australian health-tech industry.
As our business scales so does our need for excellence in engineering, and so do the opportunities for individual contributors to make a real impact to the lives of all Australians and people across the globe.
You’ll directly build tools and shape tele-health in a way that improves outcomes for tens of thousands of Aussie patients and doctors every week. At Updoc you'll be:
- Creating low-code prototypes to validate ideas quickly with the help of our product managers, low-code builders, clinical, legal, and broader teams.
- Designing reliable production-ready systems that make sure every medical outcome reaches the people that depend on them, all with the support of a strong team of senior engineers.
- Building meaningful systems with your team, end to end. If it exists, then someone depends on it for their health and wellbeing - so you’ll understand it, validate it, build it, and maintain it.
- Monitoring our data, apps, and infrastructure to surface problems, propose solutions,
and deliver the ones that you think make the most impact.
You’ll be working on a stack that has some conventional bits:
- Stock standard AWS cloud infrastructure
Plus some unconventional or uncommon bits you’ll be able to learn on the job:
- Low-code workflow automation tools
- Clojure servers
- Kafka
Your first week
- You’ll arrive to a new desk and device ready to be set up, with a clear onboarding guide.
- Each day you will spend time going through our engineering handbook, learning about our team norms, processes, rituals, and systems.
- You’ll be met by your own buddy who will introduce you to the team and help you remember names and faces so you’re not overwhelmed.
- The broader team will introduce themselves over the first few weeks to avoid overloading you with introductions, new names, and a new workplace all at once.
- Your buddy will also walk you through our code and systems, helping you run the entire stack locally and ship your first PR on the first day (it’s not nearly as daunting as it sounds).
- On Tuesday you’ll see our weekly company-wide sync and get a first view into our engineering project management cadence.
- You’ll join us for a delicious lunch specially prepared by Song, our talented team chef. We'll make sure to ask about any dietary needs beforehand,
your meal is perfectly tailored to you.
- Toward the end of each day we’ll run through stand‑up to make sure everyone in the team knows what’s being worked on and is getting the support they need to get work done.
About you
- You’re even-keeled and resilient, you want real conversations with technical and non-technical alike.
- You enjoy solving interesting technical problems and worked hard to learn how to navigate them. Hard problems energise you rather than exhaust you.
- You feel you have strong engineering fundamentals; whether you love being a generalist, or prefer going deeper in one particular area.
- You're eager to grow within a collaborative team that supports each member while celebrating individual contributions.
- You have interests outside of code - we value the things that make you a complete person.
- You take pride in your work and are committed to continuous learning.
Growth, support, and culture
At Updoc, we want our engineers to drive our culture through leadership, helping enthusiastically, and unlocking the Updoc team’s potential.
To help you achieve your goals we provide:
- Real ownership of initiative. You'll have a voice in project & product decisions, take on meaningful problems, and have the teams backing when you show your thinking.
- Peer sponsorship and support. We hire people we can trust, so when you join the team you can depend on the team to develop and back your ideas constructively.
- A high trust and collaboration workplace. When something breaks, we fix it together. We debate outcomes, not egos.
- Celebrating wins and learning
