About Centaur Institute
Centaur Institute (formerly OrthoSport Victoria Institute) is a multidisciplinary centre of excellence in musculoskeletal care in Richmond, Melbourne. Orthopaedic surgeons, sports physicians, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, strength and conditioning coaches and biomechanists work in one integrated model of care, from first presentation through to return to sport and activity.
Research is built into clinical practice. Our high-performance centre includes an instrumented biomechanics laboratory with a force-plate running track, 3D motion capture and isokinetic testing, and we hold research partnerships with the University of Melbourne, Australian Catholic University and Monash University. We build our own digital platforms to collect, analyse and report patient outcomes and biomechanical data at scale.
About the role
We are seeking a Bioinformatics & Clinical Data Scientist to own the modelling, standardisation and analysis of the Institute's clinical, physiological and biomechanical research data. The role sits in our Data Science team, reporting to the Head of Data Science and IT, and works with clinicians and researchers to turn complex biomedical datasets into reliable research evidence and clinical insight. The role suits someone with experience in a clinical environment who understands registry workflows, medical software regulation and the practical use of AI agents. This is a full-time, permanent position based in Richmond, Melbourne.
Key responsibilities
1. Apply computational biology, bioinformatics and statistical methods to collect, process and analyse clinical, physiological and biomechanical research datasets.
2.
Establish and maintain clinical data dictionaries and standard classifications for diagnoses and procedures (such as ICD-10-AM and ACHI), so research data stay consistent and reliable.
3. Design, develop and optimise secure research databases, data pipelines and electronic data capture tools that support clinical registry operations and longitudinal tracking of patient outcomes.
4. Manage registry data workflows from patient registration and consent through data collection, quality checks and reporting.
5. Develop automated extraction pipelines, validation scripts and predictive models in Python, R and SQL to evaluate treatment outcomes, rehabilitation progress and clinical performance indicators.
6. Design and apply automation pipeline to streamline clinical data handling, reporting and research workflows.
7. Contribute to research studies through data analysis, technical reports and scientific manuscripts.
8. Work with surgeons, physiotherapists, biomechanists and researchers to translate clinical and research questions into practical data solutions.
9. Implement data governance, quality assurance and privacy controls in line with Australian health data and research ethics requirements, and support compliance of in-house clinical software with medical device software regulation.
Essential criteria
- Master's degree or higher in biotechnology, bioinformatics, life sciences,
biomedical science or a closely related discipline.
- At least one year of skilled experience in a clinical environment, working with clinical or biomedical research data.
- Familiarity with clinical registry operations and data workflows, from patient registration and consent through data collection and quality assurance.
- Working knowledge of regulatory requirements for medical software in Australia, including the TGA framework for software as a medical device.
- Familiarity with AI agents and large language models, and their practical applications.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and clinical classification systems.
- Strong skills in statistical analysis and database management, including SQL and Python or R.
- Ability to conduct independent quantitative analysis and validate complex clinical and biological data.
- Experience handling sensitive health data, with an understanding of Australian privacy and research ethics requirements.
- Clear written and verbal communication with both technical teams and clinicians.
Desirable criteria
- Experience with electronic data capture or PROMs platforms, or longitudinal outcomes research in orthopaedics or sports medicine.
- Experience with human movement or physiological data, such as force plates, motion capture or wearable sensors.
- Experience building cloud data pipelines and relational databases (for example PostgreSQL) for web-based clinical platforms.
- Experience applying machine learning to clinical prediction problems.
- Contribution to peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations.
