Description
About us
Pitcrew AI designs and builds Autonomous Inspection Systems (AIS): rapidly deployable, solar-powered trailers and skids that use thermal imaging, computer vision and AI to inspect haul trucks as they drive past, without stopping them. Our systems operate at mine sites globally, including Australia, Asia, Africa and the Americas, for some of the world’s largest mining companies.
The role
You will report to the Head of Hardware Engineering and Operations and lead the design, build and integration of AIS electrical and power systems. You will also lead customer project engineering, provide technical leadership to technicians and contractors, and support deployed systems across Australia and overseas. It is a hands-on role in a small team, and your designs go straight into the field. This role suits an experienced electrical, instrumentation or controls qualified who designs as well as builds. An engineering degree is not required.
What you’ll do
- Lead the design of electrical and power systems, preparing designs, calculations and drawings for review and approval
- Design off-grid solar and battery systems, including DC architecture, low voltage design and PLC logic
- Produce and maintain electrical drawings in AutoCAD, including schematics, panel layouts and cable schedules
- Lead safety in design, including hazard identification and risk assessments
- Integrate thermal and optical cameras, sensors, RFID,
edge computing and remote connectivity
- Prepare customer interface documents and support customer engineering, cyber security and site-readiness reviews
- Run factory and site acceptance testing, and commission systems on site
- Provide remote and on-site technical support for deployed systems
- Manage the technical side of suppliers and contract builders, including non-conformances and corrective actions
- Own the bill of materials, design reviews and configuration records for each deployed unit
- Produce mechanical CAD models and drawings in Onshape, and help develop our next-generation skid and trailer designs
- Lead technical work packages, and mentor and supervise technicians and contractors
- Develop and improve technical standards and practices
- Act as the on-site technical point of contact for customers during deployment, commissioning and fault response
About you
- Trade, diploma or advanced diploma qualification in an electrical, instrumentation, electronic or mechatronic discipline
- Hands-on experience in electrical, controls or mechatronic systems, spanning design, build and commissioning
- Able to prepare design calculations, drawings and technical documentation for review and approval
- Proven strength in customer-facing roles, working directly with mine-site personnel and customer engineering teams
- Experience designing and sizing standalone solar and battery systems
- Working knowledge of low voltage DC design and AS/NZS 3000, 3008, 4509 and 5033
- PLC programming experience
- Electrical drawing experience in AutoCAD, and mechanical CAD (Onshape or similar)
- Confident working directly with customer engineering teams
- Experience leading technical work packages or projects, and mentoring or supervising others
- Willing to travel domestically and internationally for site visits
- Current driver’s licence, and able to meet client mine-site access requirements, which may include medical and fitness-for-work testing
Highly regarded
- Current unrestricted electrical licence
- Experience in mining or with heavy mobile equipment
- Experience with off-grid inverter, charge controller and battery monitoring equipment
- Thermography or thermal imaging
- Python or similar scripting for tools and data analysis
- Effective use of AI tools to speed up design, documentation and coding
Why Pitcrew AI
- Real ownership of technical decisions, with technology that is in service on mine sites now
- Products that remove people from hazardous work around heavy vehicles
- Based in our Newcastle workshop, with site travel in Australia and overseas
- Competitive salary plus super
