Mechanical Engineering Technician – Meat Processing Plant Maintenance

Ararat Abattoirs Pty Ltd operates within the meat processing industry and requires a Mechanical Engineering Technician to support plant maintenance, mechanical fault diagnosis, equipment reliability and production machinery performance.

About the role

The Mechanical Engineering Technician will provide technical maintenance and engineering support across meat processing plant operations. The role will assist with mechanical troubleshooting, machinery maintenance, technical reporting, equipment monitoring and safe operation of plant and production systems.

Key duties and responsibilities

- Inspect, test and monitor mechanical plant, production machinery and related equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and assist with troubleshooting breakdowns affecting production equipment.
- Support maintenance, repair and adjustment of mechanical systems, including conveyors, hydraulic components, fans, motors, pumps, cold-store or processing equipment.
- Assist with planned and reactive maintenance activities to minimise plant downtime.
- Review technical drawings, equipment manuals and maintenance instructions where required.
- Record faults, maintenance actions, parts requirements and equipment performance issues.
- Liaise with supervisors, maintenance staff and production teams to support safe and efficient plant operation.
- Assist with equipment testing, commissioning, installation or modification works where required.




- Support workplace health and safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out and isolation processes.
- Prepare basic technical and maintenance reports for management review.

Required qualifications and experience

- Relevant qualification in mechanical engineering, mechanical technology, maintenance engineering or a closely related field.
- At least 2 year of relevant work experience in mechanical maintenance, engineering support, plant maintenance or industrial equipment servicing.
- Experience in food processing, meat processing, manufacturing, cold-store, production plant or similar industrial workplace is highly regarded.
- Practical experience with mechanical fault diagnosis, equipment monitoring and machinery maintenance.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and work within a regulated production environment.

Required skills

- Mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of mechanical plant, motors, fans, pumps, conveyors, hydraulic or production systems.
- Ability to interpret basic technical drawings, manuals and maintenance instructions.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work with maintenance, production and management teams.

Pre-Employment Requirements

All successful candidates will be required to complete:

- Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol testing.
- Pre-employment medical assessment.
- Q Fever screening if not already vaccinated.
