2027 Graduate Lawyer Program – IDP Lawyers

Start your legal career somewhere you'll be known, supported and given the opportunity to do interesting work.

IDP Lawyers is recruiting for our 2027 Graduate Program, commencing in late February 2027.

Successful applicants will be offered an initial 12-month contract. At the conclusion of the graduate year, and subject to performance and business needs, we may offer our outstanding graduates ongoing employment as lawyers.

About us

IDP is a mid-sized Melbourne law firm specialising in the defence of personal injury and accident compensation claims.

We are appointed to the Victorian Government Legal Services Panel and act for major government agencies and statutory insurers, including WorkSafe Victoria and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).

Our work involves complex litigation, engaging legal questions and clients who are sophisticated, knowledgeable and committed to the proper operation of Victoria's compensation schemes.

We don't act for plaintiffs, but our role is an important one. We contribute to a fair and sustainable compensation system, ensuring claims are properly assessed and that the right outcomes are achieved in accordance with the law.

What we offer

Our graduates rotate through our key practice areas, including Statutory Benefits, Serious Injury/Common Law and Recoveries, with opportunities to gain exposure to our growing TAC practice.

You'll work alongside experienced lawyers, receive mentoring and guidance from partners and senior practitioners, and develop the practical skills and judgment needed to become a good lawyer.

We are large enough to offer genuinely interesting and varied work, but small enough that you'll be known as an individual.

We take professional development seriously, and we care about our people. Our partners are committed to building a supportive, collaborative workplace where people can learn, contribute and enjoy coming to work.

Visit our website and LinkedIn page to get a feel for life at IDP.

What we're looking for

Above all, we're looking for graduates with a genuine interest in our work and enthusiasm for learning.

An understanding of statutory compensation schemes will be highly regarded, as will previous experience working in a legal practice, although neither is essential.

If you loved Torts at university, that's probably a good start!

We also value life experience, employment history and the skills you've developed outside university. So don't leave that part of your CV out.

We want people who are curious, willing to work hard, keen to take advantage of the opportunities offered to them and genuinely enjoy being part of a team.

You don't need to have completed your Practical Legal Training (PLT), but you will need to be enrolled in a PLT course before commencing with us. We provide paid study leave and the required practical work experience,

although we do not offer the Supervised Workplace Training pathway.

How to apply

Applications close 9am Monday 16th November

Please visit the Careers section of our website to apply. Clicking the Apply button on LinkedIn will take you there.

We'd like you to send us your CV and a covering letter explaining why you're interested in personal injury law and, importantly, why you'd like to work at IDP Lawyers. We also would like to see your transcript (or as much of it as you have at this point).

We know you're probably applying for lots of graduate roles, and it's tempting to hit Apply without reading the instructions. But we'd really like to hear from you, rather than receive a generic application.

In return for the time you take to apply, we promise to read every application in full. No AI screening your CV or deciding whether you make the cut.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a group interview during the last week of November (don't worry, they're less terrifying than they sound!), followed by more formal panel interviews in December. We will make final hiring decisions before we close for the Christmas break.

We value diversity and inclusion at IDP Lawyers and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, culturally diverse applicants and others from under-represented backgrounds to apply. Please let us know if you need any adjustments during recruitment so that we can make the process accessible and fair.
