Toowoomba

This is an exciting opportunity to join Facilities Management within the Corporate Services portfolio at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), a team that plays an important behind-the-scenes role in creating protected, functional and welcoming environments for our students, staff and visitors.

Based at our Toowoomba campus, you’ll be part of a practical and collaborative maintenance team providing essential building and facilities support across the campus and satellite facilities at Ravensbourne and Mt Kent. From everyday repairs and preventative maintenance to responding to urgent issues, your work will make a visible difference to the University community and help keep our teaching, research and operational spaces running smoothly

Who you are

You’re a hands-on and dependable maintenance professional who takes pride in keeping buildings safe, functional and well-presented. With experience in building maintenance, facilities or operational support, you’re comfortable undertaking minor repairs, identifying faults and helping resolve maintenance issues before they become bigger problems.

Safety is central to how you work. You understand the importance of identifying hazards, assessing risks and following safe work practices, whether you’re working independently, alongside trades teams or coordinating with contractors.

Organised, adaptable and solutions-focused, you enjoy a varied workday where priorities can change quickly. You communicate well with others, keep accurate records and bring a practical, service-focused approach to supporting the people who use our facilities every day.

What you'll do

As a Maintenance Officer (Buildings), you’ll provide day-to-day building and facilities maintenance that helps keep the Toowoomba campus and its satellite facilities safe, functional and operating effectively.

Your work will include

- performing routine building and facilities maintenance, minor repairs and general handyperson tasks, including minor installations, patching and painting, and door and lock adjustments;
- undertaking operational maintenance activities such as drain clearing and recharging, gutter maintenance, water isolation and transfer, pest removal and meter readings;
- conducting regular inspections of buildings and facilities to proactively identify, report and address maintenance requirements;
- logging, actioning and completing work requests through the Facilities Management work order system, including documenting risk assessments;
- responding promptly to urgent and emergency maintenance requests to minimise disruption to University activities;
- supporting the development and delivery of planned and preventative maintenance schedules;
- working with contractors and vendors to support specialised repair works, including coordinating access and ensuring works are undertaken safely;
- maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, labour, materials and facility conditions, and escalating safety or compliance concerns when required;
- safely operating and maintaining tools and equipment;

- monitoring maintenance supplies and consumables and supporting the collection and distribution of parts;
- providing practical operational support to internal trade teams, including LV spotter and rescue works where required; and
- working collaboratively with the Health, Safety and Wellbeing team to proactively identify hazards and ensure risks are appropriately assessed, controlled and monitored.

In your first 6 to 12 months, you’ll develop strong knowledge of the campus and its facilities, build effective relationships with trades teams and contractors, and contribute to preventative maintenance activities. Most importantly, you’ll become a trusted member of the team who can be relied upon to keep maintenance issues moving and help ensure our facilities continue to perform at their best.

What will help you succeed To thrive in this role, you’ll bring practical maintenance experience, a strong commitment to safety and a proactive, solutions-focused approach. You enjoy hands-on work, take pride in delivering quality outcomes and understand the importance of responsive service within a busy operational environment.

Essential requirements:

- Completion of a post-trades certificate or advanced certificate together with extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training.
- Extensive experience within a maintenance, facilities or operational support environment, with the ability to identify faults, undertake minor operational repairs and support preventative maintenance activities.
- Ability to effectively use a work order management system, including logging, updating and completing tasks and maintaining accurate maintenance, risk and compliance records. Sound understanding of work health and safety principles and safe work practices, including hazard identification and risk assessment.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing priorities and operational requirements.
- Current driver’s licence.

Experience that will set you apart:

- A Construction Industry White Card.
- Experience within a higher education, public sector or similarly complex facilities environment.
- Experience supporting planned and preventative maintenance programs.
- Familiarity with facilities management or computerised maintenance management systems.

Travel to other UniSQ locations will be required as part of the role.
