About The Company
Learning Online Pty is an online education company serving students across Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. With more than 100 staff and a portfolio of brands spanning beauty, photography, animal care and tattooing, the company is investing in technology that improves how it operates and supports learners. Our existing South African team works closely with colleagues in Australia as part of the wider business. Artificial intelligence is already in use across the organization, including LLM-powered document automation, AI-assisted grading and chatbots connected to Salesforce, n8n and Postgres. The next stage includes developing a Google Cloud data platform on BigQuery and a multi-agent orchestration layer for tutoring, student service and analytics across our brands. This is a funded, practical engineering roadmap focused on production systems and measurable outcomes.
About The Role
We are seeking a Python AI Engineer to build, integrate and operate production AI applications. This is an engineering role focused on shipping reliable software, not research or proof-of-concept demonstrations. You will write tested, typed Python, work within CI/CD processes and take responsibility for the systems you deploy. This is a fully remote position for a South Africa-based contractor working with the Australian team.
Working hours
will align with Australian business hours, requiring an early start in South Africa. The role offers a broad scope, with level and compensation determined by the experience and production systems you have delivered. During your first six months, you will take ownership of the current automation estate, deliver internally scoped features, bring an internal knowledge assistant from design into Slack production, and establish BigQuery foundations for the agent roadmap. Responsibilities
• Build and operate LLM applications using retrieval-augmented generation,
governed knowledge bases, tool calling, structured outputs and multi-agent orchestration.
• Develop evaluation and observability practices, including golden datasets, automated evaluations, tracing, and cost and latency monitoring.
• Create integrations and semantic data layers across Salesforce, learning management systems and finance platforms using APIs, webhooks and event-driven automation.
• Develop the Google Cloud AI stack, including BigQuery, Python services on Cloud Run using FastAPI, vector search, and Claude, OpenAI and Gemini APIs.
• Implement responsible AI controls, including least-privilege access, prompt-injection defences and privacy-conscious data handling.
• Monitor production systems, investigate failures, maintain runbooks and improve reliability.
• Collaborate with international stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into helpful, maintainable systems.
• At senior levels, establish engineering standards, own architecture decisions and mentor less experienced engineers. Qualifications
• Strong Python skills, familiarity with Git and sufficient SQL knowledge to validate results.
• Experience building with REST APIs, JSON and webhooks.
• At least one practical project using an LLM API, with the ability to explain its limitations and failure modes.
• A degree in computer science, software engineering, AI or data, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience.
• For senior-level consideration: five or more years in software engineering,
including two or more years operating production LLM or agentic systems used by real users.
• For senior-level consideration: hands-on RAG experience, cloud engineering with Docker and CI/CD, and depth in enterprise integrations. Google Cloud and Salesforce experience are advantageous.
• Helpful additional experience includes LangGraph, CrewAI, Model Context Protocol, FastAPI, education technology and international remote work.
• A self-directed, commercially minded approach, comfort with ambiguity, strong learning habits and motivation to deliver measurable impact.
• A private, quiet home workspace, uncapped fibre internet with mobile backup, backup power for load shedding and a capable development machine. Benefits Compensation is R60,000 to R110,000 per month, paid monthly in ZAR. The final amount will reflect your experience and the scope you can own: the lower portion is intended for developing engineers with practical LLM experience, while the upper portion is for engineers who can lead production AI architecture, set standards and mentor others. Candidates between these levels are encouraged to apply. The position is fully remote from anywhere in South Africa and offers meaningful ownership from day one, direct access to the CTO and leadership team, and the opportunity to work on operational AI systems across four international markets. Learning is supported through relevant tools, courses and conferences. Contractors are engaged through Remote, the company’s global contracting platform. Equal Chance Learning Online Pty welcomes applicants with a range of backgrounds and career paths. We value practical ability, demonstrated experience, curiosity and a commitment to building reliable, responsible technology. Hiring decisions are based on role-related skills, experience and business needs.
