Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in the fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of boilers, tanks, structural steel and other metal components, as well as undertaking abrasive blasting, surface preparation and industrial painting duties.

The Apprentice will work under the supervision of experienced tradespeople to develop the practical skills, technical knowledge and safety awareness required to become a qualified tradesperson.

Responsibilities

Boilermaking Duties:

- Assist in the fabrication, installation and repair of boilers, tanks, structural steel and other metal structures.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints and specifications.
- Use hand and power tools to cut, shape, grind and join metal components.
- Assist with welding, fabrication and assembly of metal structures.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on equipment and metal structures.
- Assist with measuring, marking out and preparing materials for fabrication.

Blasting & Painting Duties:

- Assist with abrasive blasting and surface preparation of steel structures and equipment.
- Prepare surfaces for protective coatings by cleaning, grinding, sanding and removing rust and contaminants.




- Assist with the application of industrial protective coatings using spray painting equipment, brushes and rollers.
- Learn to operate and maintain abrasive blasting and industrial painting equipment.
- Assist with mixing and preparing paints and coatings in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
- Assist with inspecting surfaces and completed coatings to ensure quality standards are met.
- Follow correct procedures for handling, storing and disposing of paints, chemicals and blasting materials.
- Assist with touch-ups, coating repairs and general maintenance of painted surfaces.

Qualifications:

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a pre-apprenticeship program in welding or metal fabrication is preferred
- Robust mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications
- Basic knowledge of welding and metal fabrication techniques
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills
