The Jewish Independent
Sydney
About us The Jewish Independent publishes serious, independent journalism for Australian Jewry and for everyone who wants to understand it. We tell the stories of a diverse, lively and opinionated community — and we're growing.
Alongside our journalism we run events and community engagement work, and a reader community that increasingly chooses to support us directly.
About the role
This is a chance to shape how an independent masthead grows. Your role is to grow both the size of our audience across all channels and its depth — helping readers become subscribers, participants and donors.
Reporting to the CEO and working alongside our Editor-in-Chief, you'll lead up to three content production staff. The role combines strategy with hands-on production and technical skills, and with managing and developing a team.
You'll also contribute the growth side of our other sections, Events and Community Engagement, helping their work reach and grow the right audiences.
What you'll doAudience strategy
- Set and maintain our audience strategy across every platform — where we invest, what we test and what we stop
- Track and develop the journey from reader to subscriber, participant and donor as one connected picture
- Give the CEO and Board clear, plain-language insight into what's working and what's next
Social media and owned channels
- Lead our social media channels, website and newsletter: strategy, calendar, formats, publishing and community management
- Build our presence on video-first platforms while growing our loyal audiences
- Coordinate response and moderation on our channels, on agreed protocols
Newsletter
- Lead the newsletter as a product — template, segmentation, cadence, subject lines and testing — working with the editorial team,
who lead content and curation
- Lift article click-through rates and learn from every send
Production leadership
- Lead the content production team and our content management systems: briefs, standards, quality and tight turnarounds
- Manage contracts and workflows with TJI's external contractors
- Keep one shared production calendar across content, events and community engagement
- Stay hands-on, setting the craft standard and backing up the team when the news demands it
Growth
- Build the email journeys that move readers to subscribers, and subscribers to regular donors
- Develop and maintain the CRM systems and applications that support audience growth and outreach
- Work with the CEO and other section heads on reader-contribution campaigns and events promotion
What success looks like
- Our audience growing across channels, and more readers becoming subscribers, participants and donors
- Better newsletter article click rates, with a clear record of what we've learned
- A seamless content production operation with reliable, high-quality output
- Cohesive, productive cooperation with the other section heads, adding real value to their work
About you
You're a player-coach — someone whose judgment sets the direction and who still enjoys making the work yourself.
You'll bring
- Editorial-level written English
- Experience growing an audience of paid subscribers, members or donors for a publisher, cause or community organisation, adapted to a constantly changing media and marketing landscape
- Working knowledge of email, CRM, social publishing and analytics tools, and content management systems
- Experience leading permanent or contract staff
You look at the bigger picture as well as the day-to-day work, and you have the maturity to understand the environment TJI operates in. You're looking to join a team that sees itself in service to its community and to each other, and you look for ways to build consensus rather than hold your opinions over others.
Experience in the Jewish community — through communal organisations, schools, youth movements, media or networks — would be a real advantage, as would familiarity with the Jewish festivals and the rhythms of Australian Jewish life. Newsroom, events, SEO or Hebrew experience would all be welcome too.
What we offer
- A senior role with genuine scope to set strategy and see it through
- A capable team and a supportive CEO and Editor-in-Chief
- Flexibility: full time or 0.8 FTE, hybrid in Sydney
- The chance to build something that matters to a community and its conversation
- How to apply Send us your CV and a short cover letter — no more than two pages — telling us about a time you grew an audience or a base of supporters, what you did and what changed, and what draws you to this role.
We'd love to hear from people already part of the TJI community. If you'd like an informal, no-commitment conversation before applying, please get in touch with our CEO.
