About The Company The Onset is presenting an opportunity with an organisation undertaking a significant transformation of its established cloud-based software. The programme is focused on modernising and replatforming a suite of applications onto a contemporary architecture, with an emphasis on building reliable, scalable services and strengthening engineering practices. The engineering team works across Java, Spring Boot, microservices and cloud technologies, and is embracing AI-assisted development as part of its evolving approach to software delivery.

About The Role The Senior Java Engineer will be a hands-on contributor and technical leader within a major application modernisation programme. You will help design and deliver the next generation of applications, contributing to implementation while also influencing architecture, engineering standards and technical direction. This role offers the opportunity to lead features, technical initiatives and proof-of-concepts, while collaborating with engineers across the team.

A key part of the position is helping the engineering team progress from using AI tools to applying AI thoughtfully throughout software engineering. You will bring curiosity and practical ideas to this work, helping establish effective approaches to AI-enabled development. Potential areas include specification-driven development, agentic workflows, automated evaluation, testing and security, as well as applying AI to accelerate application modernisation.

You are not expected to be an AI or machine-learning specialist; strong software engineering experience and a genuine interest in the impact of AI on development are essential.

Qualifications

Candidates should have substantial experience developing software with Java and Spring Boot, together with a strong understanding of microservices and REST API design. You will bring sound architecture and system design capabilities, and experience working with cloud environments such as GCP, AWS or multi-cloud platforms. A practical understanding of resilience, observability and operational excellence is significant, as is experience applying automated testing and CI/CD practices.

You should have led features, proof-of-concepts or other technical initiatives and be comfortable mentoring engineers and influencing technical standards. Clear communication, sound judgement and the ability to work collaboratively across a team are important. Experience with AI-assisted engineering is valuable; a demonstrated interest in exploring how AI can improve software development is also welcome.

Responsibilities

Lead the design, development and delivery of application features and technical initiatives. Contribute to the replatforming of established applications onto a modern, cloud-native architecture, ensuring solutions are maintainable and fit for purpose.

Participate in architecture and system design decisions across the transformation, and build high-quality Java and Spring Boot services, microservices and REST APIs.

Identify and deliver improvements to application resilience, observability and operational practices. Support strong engineering workflows through automated testing and CI/CD, and contribute to technical proof-of-concepts that help the team assess new approaches. Explore and promote effective AI-enabled engineering practices, including appropriate evaluation, testing and security considerations.

Mentor colleagues, share knowledge and help raise engineering standards while remaining actively involved in the code.

Benefits

This role offers the opportunity to stay close to hands-on software development while having meaningful influence over architecture, technical standards and a major modernisation programme. You will work with a strong engineering team and contribute to the evolution of cloud-based applications. The position also provides scope to shape the team’s approach to AI-assisted engineering and help establish practices that may influence how future software is designed and delivered.

Equal Opportunity The Onset welcomes applications from qualified candidates with a range of backgrounds and experiences. Hiring decisions should be based on relevant skills, experience and the requirements of the role. We encourage candidates who are interested in modern Java engineering, cloud transformation and responsible AI-enabled development to apply.
