The role

We run a national public safety and crime intelligence platform used by retailers, shopping precincts, councils and police. Our customer base is growing, and we're adding to the engineering team to keep up. You'll report to the Lead Engineer and work across the whole platform, from the database to the mobile app. You'll review and merge code, run releases and look after our cloud infrastructure.

What you'll do

- Build features across the API, the web portals and the mobile app
- Review and merge pull requests, and run releases through to production
- Look after our AWS environment, including deploy pipelines, monitoring and security settings
- Share production support with the Lead Engineer
- Help with our security and compliance work, including SOC 2 and ISO 27001
- Document how things run so anyone on the team can pick them up
- What you'll work with
- Modern PHP on the backend, with MySQL and PostgreSQL databases
- TypeScript and React on the web
- React Native and Expo on mobile
- AWS, with containerised services and automated CI/CD from GitHub
- Testing across the backend, the frontend and full end-to-end flows

What you bring

- Senior experience shipping production web apps on both the backend and the frontend
- Strong PHP, ideally Laravel
- Strong TypeScript and React
- Production experience with React Native and Expo
- Solid SQL, with MySQL or PostgreSQL experience and a track record of changing live schemas safely
- Hands-on AWS, including running containerised apps in production and fixing deploys that go wrong
- A strong understanding of networking. You're comfortable with LAN and WAN, IP addressing and subnets, routing, firewalls, VPNs and DNS.

You can work out why a remote site can't reach a cloud service.
- Confidence owning a GitHub repo, including branching, code review, merge conflicts and hotfixes
- Daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, and the judgement to review AI-written code properly
- Good security habits around authentication, permissions and sensitive personal data

Good to have: Python scripting, an interest in computer vision (NVIDIA DeepStream), government or police clients, SOC 2 or ISO 27001 audits, single sign-on with Microsoft Entra ID, and video or camera systems.

Non-negotiables

- Australian citizen (we work with government and police clients)
- Based in Melbourne, Sydney or Canberra, or happy to travel for key meetings
- Available 4 days a week

Contract & Pay

- $600-700 a day, 4 days a week
- Initial 3-month contract with full time potential
- Bonuses may apply
- Equity may be offered to the right applicant
- Reporting to the Lead Engineer
- ABN required - this is a contractor position

Your first 90 days

- Weeks 1-2: your local setup is running, your first pull requests are merged, and you work through a release alongside the Lead Engineer
- Weeks 3-6: you run a release with the Lead Engineer reviewing, and you own a feature end-to-end
- Weeks 7-12: you're running merges, deploys and production support on your own

How will we know you're right

Have a quick answer to these:

1. "How do you keep a release branch and a development branch in sync when fixes land on both?"
2. "A deploy fails its health checks halfway through the rollout. What do you check first?"
3. "A very large AI-written pull request lands on Friday afternoon. How do you review it?"
4. "How do you change a busy database table without any downtime?"
