The Wardsperson team supports the day-to-day running of the hospital by helping move patients, beds and equipment, responding to service requests and assisting clinical teams across the facility.
Wardspersons work closely with nurses, allied health professionals, support services and other hospital staff. The role suits someone who is practical, reliable and considerate, and who takes pride in helping patients and staff receive safe, timely support.
About The Role The Wardsperson supports the safe and efficient operation of Belmont Hospital by responding to requests from clinical and support teams. Daily duties include transporting patients and equipment, moving beds, replenishing linen and supplies, removing waste, and providing cleaning support when required. The role may also involve assisting with rapid-response activities and transferring deceased patients to the mortuary in accordance with hospital procedures.
The Wardsperson works under clinical direction when supporting patient movements and must follow hospital procedures, infection prevention requirements and safe manual-handling practices. The position has no direct reports and reports to the Wardsperson Supervisor or nominated operational manager.
About You The ideal candidate is dependable, respectful and calm, with a helpful approach to patients, visitors and colleagues. They communicate clearly, work well as part of a team and can also manage tasks independently. They take safety seriously, follow instructions and procedures, and are willing to raise concerns when something is unsafe or unclear.
Most crucial from the outset: reliability, respectful communication,
sound judgement, teamwork, and a willingness to follow safe work practices. Candidates need to be able to meet the role’s inherent physical requirements, with reasonable adjustments considered where applicable.
Can be learned or developed on the job: hospital-specific procedures, equipment and systems, local workflows, and detailed knowledge of infection prevention and patient-transfer processes. Relevant experience is valuable, but a willingness to learn is essential.
How You'll Be Supported The successful applicant will complete a structured orientation to Belmont Hospital, including local procedures, work health and safety, infection prevention, manual handling, patient-transfer practices and the safe use of relevant equipment. They will be supported through initial buddy shifts, guidance from experienced Wardspersons and regular check-ins with their supervisor.
Any required mandatory training will be arranged, with further instruction provided for local workflows, emergency-response expectations and role boundaries. Training needs and progress will be reviewed during the induction period, with ongoing support and refresher training provided as required.
