About Birrin Independence Hub

Birrin Independence Hub (BIH) is a participant-led disability support service built around choice, control, independence and individual autonomy.

We provide self-provided, self-managed, non-public-facing disability support services. Our approach is different from traditional agency-based disability services: the participant leads the support arrangement, with their preferences, routines, goals, communication style and individual requirements guiding how support is delivered.

At BIH, we believe disability support should be directed by the person receiving it, not dictated by a provider’s standardised routines or organisational preferences.

We are looking for reliable, respectful and person-centred Disability Support Workers who understand that their role is to support a participant’s independence, dignity and right to make decisions about their own life.

About the Role

As a Disability Support Worker with BIH, you will provide individualised support in accordance with the participant’s direction, established support arrangements and individual requirements.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who values consistency, clear communication, accountability and a genuinely participant-led approach.

Depending on the roster and the participant’s needs, responsibilities may include:

- Personal care: Assisting with personal hygiene, dressing, grooming and other activities of daily living.
- Domestic assistance: Supporting household tasks, cleaning, laundry and maintaining a safe and comfortable home environment.
- Meal preparation: Assisting with meal preparation and kitchen tasks in accordance with the participant’s preferences and dietary requirements.
- Community access: Supporting participation in community activities, appointments, shopping and other activities chosen by the participant.
- Daily routines: Providing support with morning and evening routines, transfers and other agreed support tasks.
- Overnight support: Undertaking sleepover or active overnight duties where required by the roster and the nature of the shift.
- Participant-directed assistance: Following the participant’s instructions, preferences and established support arrangements wherever safe, lawful and appropriate.
- Documentation and communication: Maintaining accurate shift records, reporting incidents and communicating relevant information to the appropriate people.
- Safe support practices: Following manual handling procedures, infection prevention requirements, workplace health and safety obligations and any applicable individual support protocols.

Not every shift will involve all the duties listed above. Responsibilities will depend on the allocated shift and the participant’s support requirements.

Our Participant-Led Philosophy

BIH operates on the principle that the participant is at the centre of every support decision.

This means:

- The participant directs their daily routines, preferences and activities.
- Support workers respect the participant’s autonomy, privacy, dignity and right to make informed choices.
- Individual preferences and communication requirements are respected.
- Workers do not impose their own routines, values or assumptions on the participant.
- Communication is direct, respectful, clear and responsive to the participant’s needs.
- Consistency and reliability are valued because trusted support relationships matter.

- Workers understand the difference between supporting a person’s choices and making decisions on their behalf.
- Participants are supported to exercise choice and control over how their funded supports are delivered, within applicable legal, safety and service requirements.

BIH is a non-public-facing disability support service. This role is focused on delivering direct, individualised support rather than undertaking public-facing customer service or general agency reception duties.

We want workers who understand that disability support is about working alongside a person, respecting their expertise in their own life and helping them maintain as much independence and control as possible.

Two Pay Streams – Applicable Award Classifications

BIH uses two pay streams for the relevant categories of work. The applicable classification depends on the duties performed during each part of the shift.

1. Home Care – Home Care Employee Level 3, Pay Point 1

Work falling within the applicable home care classification will be paid at the Home Care Employee Level 3, Pay Point 1 rate under the relevant award.

This stream may apply to eligible home-based duties, including personal care, domestic assistance and other duties that fall within the classification and scope of the applicable award.

2. Community Access – SACS Level 2, Pay Point 2

Work falling within the applicable Social and Community Services (SACS) classification will be paid at the Social and Community Services Employee Level 2, Pay Point 2 rate under the relevant award.

This stream may apply to eligible community access and associated duties where the classification is appropriate under the applicable award.

Applicable Loadings and Allowances

In addition to the applicable base rates, employees will receive relevant casual loadings, penalty rates, shift loadings and allowances in accordance with the applicable award, employment arrangements and the circumstances of the shift.

The applicable pay rate will be determined by the work actually performed, the relevant classification and the applicable award provisions. Different classifications may apply to different duties within a shift where permitted by the award.

BIH is committed to transparent payroll practices and accurately paying employees for the work they perform.
