About us
Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation (BTAC) is the Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBC) for the Thalanyji People through Native Title Determination WCD2008/003 and also agent for the Thalanyji/Nhuwala Native Title claimants (WC2024/007).
The organisation manages the native title of Thalanyji People and enables the social, economic and cultural development of BTAC members. The vision is for Thalanyji People to secure a future where identity remains strong, members are increasingly self-reliant and in charge of their own destiny, and can all lead secure and comfortable lives.
About the role
This is a new role within the current Member Services Team.
The Pathways Officer provides culturally safe, responsive, and holistic navigation support to Corporation members and their families facing complex life challenges. Acting as a trusted, informal caseworker, this role assists individuals navigating drug or alcohol dependencies, mental health struggles, and interactions with the justice or healthcare systems (including Community Based Orders and Community Treatment Orders). Rather than providing clinical treatment, this position focuses on barrier removal, advocacy, and creating explicit pathways to specialised third-party agencies, clinics, and rehabilitative support.
Key responsibilities
- Provide strengths-based, informal casework to members and their children experiencing alcohol/drug dependencies, mental health challenges, or acute life stressors
- Conduct basic, culturally secure intake and needs-assessments to understand a member's immediate situation
- Develop collaborative,
informal action plans alongside members to empower them in taking positive, remedial steps forward
- Act as a supportive liaison for members or their children subject to WA Court Community Based Orders (CBOs), ensuring they understand and meet their compliance obligations to avoid breaches
- Assist members on involuntary Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) to engage positively with treating psychiatrists, case managers, and the Mental Health Advocacy Service (MHAS)
- Accompany members to community corrections appointments, tribunal hearings, or legal meetings as a trusted advocate when required
- Identify, build, and maintain a registry of relevant third-party medical clinics, rehabilitation facilities, mental health services, and diversionary programs
- Facilitate warm referrals to external agencies, actively helping members book appointments and coordinate transport
- Maintain confidential, accurate, and secure records of member interactions, consent forms, and referral outcomes in line with privacy legislation
- Collaborate internally with other Corporation staff to ensure a wrap-around approach to member well-being
About you
- Demonstrated deep understanding of the historical, social,
and cultural factors impacting Aboriginal people in WA, with a proven ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with Traditional Owners and community members
- Proven experience working in a case management, community services, peer support, or youth work role, ideally supporting individuals dealing with addiction, mental health, or complex trauma
- Familiarity with the WA justice system (Community Corrections/CBOs) and/or the WA mental health system (CTOs and community clinics)
- High-level interpersonal, active listening, and advocacy skills, with the ability to build trust with members while remaining professional with external stakeholders
- Ability to maintain accurate, confidential case notes and use basic digital tools (Microsoft Office/database systems) responsibly
- Current WA Driver's Licence
- Current National Police Clearance
- Current WA Working with Children Check (WWC)
- Ability to travel intrastate to remote site locations
Salary & Benefits
- Competitive annual salary and access to salary packaging providing tax benefits up to $18,550 per year.
- 4 Weeks Annual Leave with Leave Loading of 17.5%.
