UGL’s Utilities team designs, constructs and maintains critical infrastructure across the power, water and renewable sectors, ranging from HV substations and transmission lines up to 500kV through to power stations and wastewater treatment plants. We design and construct substations, transmission lines, power generation and electrical distribution networks.

Our Utilities team works hard and celebrates success and effort. If you are looking for a bright future and the opportunity to grow your career, then join UGL, a great place to work.

Why this role

- Apply your specialist expertise across high-voltage transmission line and substation projects.
- Deliver a broad range of technically challenging primary design and power system studies.
- Work with major Australian network service providers on critical energy infrastructure.
- Take ownership of technical deliverables while collaborating with engineering disciplines, drafting teams and clients.
- Develop your leadership capability through design checking, mentoring and Design Package Leader opportunities.
- Join UGL in a permanent, full-time position based in North Sydney.

About the role

Reporting to the Principal Electrical Engineer, you will produce and check design deliverables and specialist studies for high-voltage transmission line and substation projects. You will work with minimal supervision, coordinate interfaces across engineering disciplines and support the delivery of technically sound outcomes on time and within budget.

The role provides the opportunity to apply mature professional engineering knowledge across earthing, insulation coordination, low-frequency induction, electromagnetic fields, corona, conductor selection and power system studies. You may also act as a Design Package Leader and provide guidance and mentoring to developing engineers.

Key responsibilities

- Deliver specialist studies covering low-frequency induction, EMF,

earthing, insulation coordination, lightning and switching performance, corona, audible noise and radio interference.
- Undertake transmission line and substation primary design, including line parameters, transposition, conductor selection, electrical clearances and static and dynamic line loading.
- Complete substation earthing design and modelling, including soil modelling and touch and step voltage assessments.
- Prepare and check technical reports, calculations, specifications and design deliverables for accuracy and adequacy.
- Coordinate technical interfaces with other engineering disciplines and provide direction to drafting personnel.
- Liaise with clients and provide technical support to tendering, business development and construction teams.
- Monitor design progress against project schedules, implement corrective action where required and act as Design Package Leader when appointed.

What we offer

- Benefit from 16 weeks of paid primary parental leave.
- Complimentary salary continuance insurance.
- Discounted Medibank health insurance.
- Shape your career with an Individual Development Plan.
- Participate in our Wellness Program with AIA Vitality.
- Access our OneRewards Discount Program.

About you

- A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with eligibility for Engineers Australia membership.
- At least six years of experience in HV power system design or studies, ideally across transmission line and substation projects.

- Practical experience across several relevant study areas, including earthing, low-frequency induction, EMF, insulation coordination, corona and power system analysis.
- Proficiency with CDEGS modules such as MALZ, HIFREQ, RESAP, FCDIST, FFTSES, SESEnviroPlus and SESShield, together with experience using Argon and CYME.
- Experience with EMT and power system study platforms such as EMTP or PSCAD, and PSS®E or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
- Working knowledge of applicable standards and guidelines, including AS/NZS 7000, AS 2067, IEEE 80, ENA EG-0, AS/NZS 4853 and IEC 60071.
- Strong technical writing, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work independently, check engineering deliverables and support developing team members.

Experience with PLS-CADD, Python or Java, design-for-construction environments, site commissioning or postgraduate power engineering studies will be highly regarded. CPEng and NER registration, or progress towards these credentials, is also desirable.
