Burnie
Test & Operations Technologist – Mining Technology
Burnie – North West Coast, Tasmania
Take your technical skills in an exciting new direction!
Are you a mechanic, auto electrician, heavy equipment technician, marine technician or hands-on technical qualified looking for something different?
Imagine taking your practical skills beyond traditional servicing and repairs and applying them to the testing and development of advanced underground mining machinery and technology.
We have an exciting opportunity to join a global OEM of mining equipment and mining operational technology at its specialised proving ground in Burnie, on Tasmania's North West Coast.
This is a newly created position, reflecting the OEM's increased investment in the development, testing and validation of advanced underground mining equipment and technology. As the organisation expands its engineering and testing activities, this role offers an exciting opportunity to become part of a growing technical team.
You'll be part of a talented and collaborative team spanning three continents, responsible for testing leading-edge underground mining operational technologies used by mining operations around the globe. Working alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists, you'll help ensure these sophisticated systems perform safely, reliably and effectively in demanding underground mining environments.
Your work will involve hands-on testing, troubleshooting and validation of underground mining equipment and integrated technology systems, including machine automation, remote operation and safety technologies.
You don't need previous mining technology or testing experience! We're looking for someone with strong practical aptitude, a passion for machinery and technology, and a genuine willingness to learn.
This is an opportunity to build on your existing technical experience while developing new skills in engineering testing, advanced equipment systems and underground machine operation.
What you'll be doing
As a Test & Operations Technologist, you'll work in a practical proving-ground environment where engineering, machinery and technology come together.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing, inspecting and setting up machinery and technology systems for testing.
- Supporting hands-on testing,
verification and validation of underground equipment and integrated systems.
- Troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, electronic and technology-related issues.
- Identifying, investigating and documenting unexpected machine or system behaviour.
- Working alongside engineers and technical specialists to support testing and problem-solving activities.
- Supporting the safe and efficient operation of machinery during testing activities.
- Learning to operate underground mobile equipment, with training and authorisation provided.
- Developing your understanding of advanced mining technologies, automation and machine systems.
- Contributing to a collaborative, safety-focused engineering and operations environment.
What we're looking for
We're open to candidates from a broad range of technical and trade backgrounds.
You could have experience from one or more of the following:
- Automotive Electrical or Auto Electrical Technology
- Diesel Mechanics or Heavy Vehicle Mechanics
- Mobile Plant or Heavy Equipment Maintenance
- Marine Mechanical or Marine Electrical Systems
- Electrical or Electronic Systems
- Mechanical Systems
- Instrumentation or Controls
- Field Service or Equipment Commissioning
- Engineering Technician or Technologist roles
Alternatively, you may have another hands-on technical background involving machinery, diagnostics, fault finding or equipment troubleshooting.
What matters most is your practical ability, problem-solving mindset and enthusiasm for learning new technologies.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- A relevant trade qualification, technical diploma, associate degree or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong mechanical, electrical or electronic troubleshooting skills.
- Confidence working hands-on with machinery and technical systems.
- A methodical approach to identifying and resolving technical problems.
- A strong commitment to workplace safety.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Curiosity,
adaptability and a genuine interest in how machinery and technology work together.
Experience with heavy mobile equipment, underground machinery, machine operation, commissioning or product testing would be an advantage, but is not essential.
Why consider this opportunity?
It's not your typical technician role!
Rather than focusing solely on servicing, repairing or operating equipment, you'll have the opportunity to work at the intersection of machinery, engineering and advanced technology.
You'll benefit from:
- Newly created position: Join a growing technical team as the OEM increases its investment in underground mining equipment and technology development.
- Globally deployed technology: Contribute to the testing and validation of advanced underground mining technologies used by mining operations around the world.
- Cutting-edge technology: Work hands-on with sophisticated underground mining equipment, automation and integrated technology systems.
- Global collaboration: Work alongside a talented and collaborative team of engineers and technical specialists spanning three continents, contributing to the development and testing of mining technologies used worldwide.
- Career development: Expand your existing technical skills into engineering testing, verification and validation.
- New capabilities: Receive training to operate underground mobile equipment in a specialised testing environment.
- Variety: Enjoy a practical role combining machinery preparation, technical investigations, troubleshooting and test operations.
- Safety-first culture: Be part of an environment where safety is central to every activity.
Ready for something different?
If you enjoy working with machinery, solving technical challenges and understanding how things work, this could be the prospect to take your career in an exciting new direction.
Whether you're an experienced tradesperson, technician or technically minded professional looking to broaden your skills, we'd love to hear from you.
Apply now and explore a career working with advanced mining machinery and technology!
