The Environmental Permitting and Compliance Division (EPCD) is responsible for administering legislation and regulatory schemes designed to protect Australia's land, water, air, wildlife and heritage. These schemes are integral to sustainable stewardship and cover international wildlife trade, air quality, waste management, sea dumping, and contaminated sites. We also have additional compliance and enforcement responsibilities for underwater cultural heritage.
Our division is comprised of the Wildlife Trade and Regulatory Capability Branch, the Compliance and Enforcement Branch and the Waste Environmental Permits Advice Branch.
The Waste and Environmental Permits Advice Branch delivers government priorities across a number of sections to regulate waste exports, hazardous waste, the national television and computer recycling scheme, air quality emission standards, environmental contamination and sea dumping. We work to conserve, protect and sustainably manage our setting for the benefit of the Australian and international community.
The Hazardous Waste and National TV and Computer Recycling Scheme Section operates a permitting system to ensure that hazardous wastes being moved across international boundaries are transported and processed in a manner that protects the environment and human health, with the prior informed consent of all countries involved in the movement. The permit system under the Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1989 fulfils Australia’s international obligations under the Basel Convention. The section also administers the National TV and Computer Recycling Scheme, a co-regulatory product stewardship scheme which provides free nationwide collection and recycling services for end-of-life televisions and computer equipment, keeping electronic waste out of landfill, and recovering valuable materials for reuse.
