About the role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will lead a critical department within an established Australian furniture manufacturer. This is a key position within the leadership team, with ownership of the department's people, daily workflow, materials, quality, costs and continuous improvement. You may come from furniture finishing, cabinet making, joinery, automotive refinishing, industrial coatings or another relevant coatings environment.

Key responsibilities

- Manage the department's daily workflow, priorities and resources to meet production schedules
- Lead, support and develop the team, setting clear expectations and building skills through practical training
- Manage materials, stock levels and ordering, and maintain strong relationships with coating and equipment suppliers
- Oversee preparation, staining, spray application and finishing quality, helping resolve technical issues
- Monitor labour and material usage, control waste and improve efficiency
- Maintain safe working practices and ensure equipment is properly maintained




- Work closely with other department leaders to keep production moving and meet customer commitments
- Identify and implement improvements to processes, quality and team performance

About you

- Proven experience managing people or leading a production team
- A sound technical background in spray painting, coatings or surface finishing
- Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
- A practical approach to solving problems and improving processes
- The ability to coach team members and build a capable, accountable team
- An understanding of production costs, material usage and quality standards
- Clear communication skills and a team-oriented approach
- Furniture or timber finishing experience would be highly regarded, but transferable skills from other coatings industries are welcome
