Technical Lead / Principal Engineer

We’re working with a nimble, high-performing technology startup delivering secure, scalable digital platforms for government.

They are extending a core platform into a consumer-facing web application used by thousands of Victorian households and businesses — and are now seeking a Technical Lead / Principal Engineer to own the technical direction of the product.

This is not just a lead developer role.

This is architectural ownership, engineering leadership, and delivery accountability combined.

What You’ll Be Responsible For Architecture & Technical Leadership

- Own the end-to-end solution architecture (backend, integrations, infrastructure)
- Drive security-by-design, scalability, and maintainability
- Engage directly with client technical and business stakeholders
- Shape architectural direction across microservices and cloud-native patterns

Technical Governance & Documentation
- Author Technical Specifications and Solution Designs
- Maintain Design Decision Records
- Ensure traceable, structured technical documentation
- Mentor developers and automation test engineers
- Lead code reviews and engineering standards uplift
- Raise technical maturity across the team

Delivery & Risk Management
- Lead technical refinement, elaboration and estimation




- Identify technical risks and dependencies early
- Work closely with project and product stakeholders

Security & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to government security standards
- Align to SOC2 / ISO27001 practices
- Guide observability, monitoring and operational readiness

- Proven experience as a Technical Lead / Principal Engineer
- Experience with microservices and API design
- AWS (Lambda, API Gateway), cloud-native architecture
- CI/CD, DevSecOps, Infrastructure-as-Code
- Strong technical documentation capability
- Experience mentoring engineers

Nice to Have
- WCAG / accessibility knowledge
- Observability tooling experience
