About the Opportunity
Are you studying Urban and Regional Planning and looking for an opportunity to take your learning beyond the classroom?

The City of Wanneroo is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated planning professional or university student who is progressing towards completing a degree in Urban and Regional Planning to join our Planning Services team on a part-time basis.

This role is ideal for someone looking to gain practical planning experience in a large local government environment, strengthen technical and communication skills, and see planning principles put into practice. You’ll learn from experienced professionals, contribute to meaningful projects, and build a strong foundation for a career in town planning. Working alongside experienced planning professionals, you'll gain valuable insight into how planning decisions shape growing communities, guide development and create great places to live, work and play.

With 30.4 hours per fortnight, this is a fantastic opportunity to build your professional experience while continuing your university studies.

What You'll Be Doing
Working with the Planning Services team, your primary focus will be providing planning advice and guidance to customers through our Duty Planner service.

Your responsibilities will include:
• Providing planning advice and responding to enquiries from residents, businesses, consultants and stakeholders.
• Assisting customers to understand planning requirements, processes, policies and legislation.
• Delivering a positive customer experience while helping customers find practical solutions to planning issues.
• Researching planning legislation, policies and guidelines to support planning assessments and recommendations.
• Working collaboratively with colleagues across the City to help achieve positive planning outcomes.
• Assisting with the assessment of simple development applications.
• Developing your understanding of how legislation, policy and planning principles guide development across the City.

No two days are necessarily the same, and you'll have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge while working on real planning matters that contribute to the future of our community.

What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who is curious, organised and keen to learn,

with a genuine interest in town planning and the role local government plays in shaping our communities.

To be successful in this role, you'll have:
• A tertiary qualification in Urban and Regional Planning, eligibility for full membership with the Planning Institute of Australia, or significant progress towards completing a relevant tertiary qualification.
• A foundational understanding of urban planning principles and their application in Western Australia.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally with a range of people.
• Valuable research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Confidence using computer systems and technology.
• A current C Class Driver's Licence.

Previous experience in a similar planning role would be advantageous, but we're particularly interested in candidates who are keen to develop their skills, apply their university learning and gain practical experience in a professional environment.
