Delivery Centric

Sydney

Delivery Centric is seeking an experienced GraphQL Engineer with strong expertise in TypeScript, Node.js, API design, and distributed systems to build and maintain secure, scalable backend services in an enterprise environment.

The successful candidate will have hands-on experience designing and managing APIs, implementing OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect authentication, and troubleshooting complex issues across distributed systems. Experience with GraphQL, Apollo Federation, and modern API management practices will be highly regarded.

We are looking for a proactive engineer with strong technical ownership, sound problem-solving skills, and the ability to deliver high-quality solutions in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and maintain backend services using TypeScript and Node.js within a large, strictly typed codebase.
- Design, version, and manage APIs, ensuring backward compatibility and reliable integration across multiple applications.
- Implement secure authentication and authorisation using OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, including token scoping, delegation, and secure token handling.
- Develop and support GraphQL APIs, with a focus on schema design, performance, error handling, and API reliability.
- Troubleshoot issues across API gateways, backend services, and downstream systems using logs, distributed tracing, and correlation IDs.
- Build and maintain automated unit and end-to-end tests using tools such as Jest, Vitest, Playwright, or equivalent.
- Work with AWS services in a restricted enterprise environment, diagnosing issues and collaborating with platform teams to resolve infrastructure and access-related challenges.
- Follow modern engineering practices, including Git-based version control, CI/CD pipelines, feature flags, release management, and rollback strategies.
- Apply security best practices, including least-privilege access,

secure handling of credentials, and appropriate authorisation checks.
- Collaborate with product, business, and engineering stakeholders to clarify requirements, identify edge cases, and deliver effective technical solutions.
- Participate in code reviews, share technical knowledge, and take ownership of delivery from design through to production support.
- Provide proactive updates, raise blockers early, and manage work effectively within sprint delivery cycles.

Mandatory Skills and Experience

- Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript and server-side Node.js, including developing backend services in large, strictly typed codebases.
- Proven experience in API design, versioning, contract management, and backward compatibility.
- Practical knowledge of OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, including authentication flows, token scopes, delegation, and secure token management.
- Experience working with AWS in enterprise environments, including restricted permissions and collaboration with platform teams.
- Understanding of load balancing, secrets management, caching, and container services.
- Solid debugging and observability skills across distributed systems, using logs, traces, and correlation IDs.
- Experience writing automated unit and end-to-end tests using modern testing frameworks.
- Familiarity with CI/CD, Git workflows, feature flags, release candidates, and rollback practices.
- Strong understanding of application security, access control, authorisation, and secure coding practices.

- Excellent communication, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and stakeholder collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated ownership, initiative, and the ability to work independently with loosely defined requirements.

Desirable Skills

- Hands-on GraphQL experience, including schema design, query performance, and error handling.
- Experience with Apollo Federation 2, Apollo GraphOS, or Rover tooling for schema validation and monitoring.
- Familiarity with Prometheus and Grafana for monitoring and observability.
- Experience with API gateway technologies, particularly Kong.
- Experience building or operating Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
- Knowledge of retail banking systems, including accounts, customers, transactions, and payments.
- Experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot in large codebases.
- Experience working in shared monorepositories.
- Sydney-based candidates are preferred.

What We’re Looking For

- Strong ownership: Takes initiative, develops practical plans, and follows through to completion.
- Product mindset: Understands business needs, challenges assumptions, and considers customer impact.
- Pragmatic problem-solving: Works effectively with incomplete documentation and investigates issues systematically.
- Collaborative approach: Contributes to code reviews, supports colleagues, and communicates technical differences constructively.
- Reliable delivery: Breaks work into achievable tasks, provides realistic estimates, and flags delivery risks early.
- Sound technical judgement: Balances delivery speed with quality, security, maintainability, and long-term reliability.
