Small team. Big ownership. Melbourne / Remote | TypeScript | Excellent salary, bonus, and equity.
Wanted: A software engineer who doesn't need a ticket to tell them what to do.
We're representing a Melbourne-based technology business that's deliberately building its engineering team around a fairly straightforward philosophy: Own the problem. Not just the pull request.
We're looking for an exceptional Senior Software Engineer who wants genuine ownership, serious technical challenges and the freedom to make decisions without navigating five layers of management.
The business.
- Ambitious, well-backed Australian technology company tackling some genuinely complex problems in a sector that desperately needs better software.
- Think payments, claims, reconciliations, financial workflows and large amounts of administration that shouldn't require nearly as much human intervention as they currently do.
- The technology needs to be reliable, intuitive and thoughtfully engineered.
- It's meaningful work, but without the obligatory speeches about changing the world.
The team.
- The engineering team is deliberately small, experienced and highly collaborative.
- Several team members have worked together before. They've built trust, developed strong working relationships and established an engineering culture that values good judgement over process for the sake of process.
- You'll work directly with the CTO and own meaningful problems from beginning to end.
- That means understanding the problem, challenging assumptions, designing the solution, building it,
shipping it and making sure it actually works.
- Nobody is going to hand you a 40-page specification and ask you to disappear for three weeks.
- Sometimes the right answer is less code. Occasionally, it's no code at all.
- Both are perfectly acceptable.
The engineering. The stack is TypeScript end-to-end:
- React Native and Remix
- AdonisJS and PostgreSQL
- AWS
- AI agents and modern engineering tooling
The team values simplicity, maintainability and engineering decisions that stand up over time.
They use AI extensively to accelerate development, but there's an important distinction: AI can help write the code; the engineer remains accountable for what gets shipped.
They're not interested in complexity for its own sake.
Nobody gets extra points for introducing six microservices to solve a problem that needed one sensible database query.
About you. You've spent at least five years building software and have developed a healthy appreciation for what makes good engineering. You're comfortable across the stack and enjoy understanding the business problem as much as solving the technical one. You're someone who:
- Takes genuine ownership of problems, systems and outcomes
- Enjoys working directly with stakeholders and users
- Understands data modelling, APIs and production systems
- Values simple, reliable solutions over unnecessarily clever ones
- Uses AI intelligently without outsourcing technical judgement
- Takes accountability seriously without taking yourself too seriously
- Wants to be part of a small team where individual contribution really matters
Experience in financial systems, accounting, payments or complex transactional workflows would be particularly valuable. A computer science or computer engineering degree would be welcome, but engineering capability and judgement matter more.
What's on offer?
- A genuinely small, senior engineering team
- Direct access to the CTO
- Real technical autonomy and end-to-end ownership
- Remote flexibility across Australia, with Melbourne preferred
- An excellent office in Melbourne's Southbank
- Regular opportunities to collaborate in person
- No timesheets, attendance tracking or performative presenteeism
- Top-of-market remuneration, performance bonus and equity
- A culture that values accountability, trust and sustainable working hours
One final thingThis isn't a role for someone who wants to be told exactly what to build. It's for someone who enjoys working out what needs building in the first place.
Someone who can challenge an assumption, simplify a system, make a decision and take responsibility for the result.
