Lizard Island

Ever imagined living and working on a tropical island? Here's your opportunity to do just that!

Talent Scout Consulting is partnering with the Australian Museum to recruit a Station Officer for the spectacular Lizard Island Research Station (LIRS), located on the Great Barrier Reef in Far North Queensland.
This is a unique 11-month contract opportunity, commencing in January 2027, to join a small, dedicated team supporting an internationally recognised marine research facility.

But before we tell you about the job, there's something important you need to know.

Island life isn't for everyone!

Living and working on Lizard Island means becoming part of a close-knit community in a genuinely remote environment. Accommodation and utilities are provided in a self-contained house, typically shared with 1-2 other staff. .

For the right person, it's an incredible lifestyle. For others, the isolation and close living arrangements can be challenging.

We're looking for someone who genuinely embraces this type of environment, enjoys working with others and is happy to roll up their sleeves and help wherever needed.

About the Role
As Station Officer, you'll play an important part in keeping the research station running smoothly, supporting everything from accommodation and visitor services through to general maintenance, administration and day-to-day operations.

No two days will necessarily look the same, and that's part of the appeal!
Working closely with the Station co-Directors and wider staff team, your responsibilities will include:

- Assisting with general maintenance and repairs to buildings, equipment and Station facilities.
- Supporting the upkeep and preparation of accommodation, laboratories and visitor areas.
- Assisting with maintenance of boats, water supply systems, waste management facilities and other essential infrastructure.
- Welcoming researchers and visitors,

coordinating airstrip transfers, inductions and providing general assistance.
- Managing visitor documentation, maintaining records and assisting with reports and administrative tasks.
- Keeping accurate servicing and maintenance records.
- Pitching in wherever needed to support the broader Station team.

About You
We're not necessarily looking for someone who has done this exact job before.
We're looking for a practical, resourceful all-rounder with a positive attitude, excellent people skills and the ability to adapt to the unexpected.
You might come from a background in remote hospitality, facilities management, tourism, caretaking, maintenance, marine operations or remote community services.
What matters most is your ability to work collaboratively, solve problems and contribute positively to a small team.

To be considered, you'll need:

- A current unrestricted driver's license.
- A practical, hands-on approach and the ability to assist with general maintenance and repairs.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Good administrative and computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- The physical capacity to undertake manual work in a tropical environment.
- A resilient, adaptable personality and genuine enthusiasm for remote living.

The following would be highly regarded:

- Experience driving 4WD vehicles on sandy tracks.
- A recreational boat license or higher marine qualification.

- A forklift license or willingness to obtain one.
- First Aid qualifications.
- Marine radio and/or diving qualifications.
- Previous experience living or working in remote locations.

What's on Offer?

- 11-month contract commencing early January 2027, with potential for extension.
- Full-time hours – 35 hours per week.
- Accommodation and utilities provided onsite.
- The opportunity to live and work in one of Australia's most extraordinary natural environments.
- A diverse role where your contribution genuinely matters.
- The chance to support important marine research and conservation activities.
- A unique lifestyle and the opportunity to develop a broad range of practical skills.

A Little More About Island Life
Lizard Island is a beautiful but isolated location, and it's key that applicants understand the realities of living there.
You'll be part of a small community where teamwork, mutual respect, flexibility and consideration for others are essential.
You'll need to be comfortable sharing accommodation, spending extended periods away from mainland conveniences and adapting to the practical challenges that come with remote island living.
If you're someone who enjoys independence, appreciates nature, gets along with people and doesn't mind getting your hands dirty, you may find it an incredibly rewarding experience.

Interested?
If you're looking for something a little different from the usual 9-to-5 and genuinely believe remote island life would suit you, we'd love to hear from you.
Apply now with your CV and a brief cover letter telling us about your relevant experience and, importantly, why living and working on Lizard Island appeals to you.
