Specialised Defence Work. Genuine Flexibility. No FIFO Lifestyle.
Looking for something different from the traditional workshop or FIFO environment?
Join Varley Group’s Fleet Services team and bring your mechanical expertise to a role supporting specialised vehicles and equipment used across critical Defence operations in Western Australia.
Based primarily at RAAF Base Pearce, you’ll work on unique assets including Aviation Refuelling Vehicles, Ground Support Equipment and specialised fleet vehicles, with support also provided to customer locations including Rockingham and Exmouth.
This is a role where quality matters more than rushing the next job out the door. You’ll have the autonomy to get the job done properly, backed by a small, experienced team that values your contribution.
Why This Role Is Different
We know experienced mechanics have plenty of options in WA, so here’s what you can expect with Varley:
- Company Tool of Trade Vehicle
- One Rostered Day Off (RDO) each month
- Genuine flexibility to support work/life balance and family commitments
- All required tooling supplied
- Company laptop and phone provided
- Interesting, specialised Defence fleet and aviation support equipment
- Quality-focused work where workmanship and outcomes matter
- Small, collaborative team where you’re known and valued
- Ongoing technical training and upskilling
- Long-term career development across the broader Varley Group
About the Role:
As a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic within our Fleet Services team, you’ll maintain, repair, diagnose and troubleshoot specialised vehicles and equipment, helping ensure critical customer assets remain safe, reliable and operational.
Your work will include:
- Preventative maintenance, servicing and repairs
- Mechanical diagnostics and fault-finding
- Hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems
- Maintenance of specialised vehicles and equipment
- Interpreting technical drawings, schematics and maintenance procedures
- Working directly with customers to support equipment reliability and operational readiness
You’ll have the opportunity to work independently while still having the support and expertise of an experienced team around you.
What You'll Bring
Ideally, you’re a qualified Heavy Vehicle Mechanic who enjoys fault-finding, takes pride in quality workmanship and is looking for something beyond routine workshop work.
We’re also open to experienced Plant Mechanics with transferable skills and the right attitude, with further training and upskilling available for the right person.
You’ll bring:
- A recognised Heavy Vehicle Mechanic qualification, or relevant Plant Mechanic qualification and experience
- Strong mechanical, diagnostic and fault-finding capability
- Experience maintaining heavy vehicles, plant or specialised equipment
- Experience with hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics and procedures
- Strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship
- Ability to work autonomously and within a small team
- Professional and customer-focused approach
- Willingness to learn and broaden your technical capability
Defence Experience? We'd Especially Like to Hear From You!
If you’ve previously worked within the Australian Defence Force or Defence industry,
your experience could be particularly valuable to our team.
Varley provides the opportunity to continue working in a familiar Defence workplace, where your understanding of Defence operations, standards and culture is genuinely valued, while building a long-term civilian career.
Veterans and ex-Defence personnel are strongly encouraged to apply.
Experience with Aviation Refuelling Vehicles, Ground Support Equipment or specialised Defence fleet assets will also be highly regarded.
Essential Requirements:
As this role supports Defence operations, successful candidates will need to:
- Be an Australian Citizen
- Hold a current unrestricted Australian driver’s licence
- Be eligible and willing to obtain and maintain the required Australian Government Security Clearance
- Successfully complete a Federal Police Check
- Successfully complete a pre-employment medical, including Drug & Alcohol testing
