Head of Venue | Southbank

Full-time permanent | Onsite | $105,000 + 12% super

Some people love the big idea. Others love making sure every single detail behind it actually happens.

This role needs both.

We’re partnering with one of Melbourne’s most iconic arts and cultural organisations to find an experienced Head of Venue who can take real ownership of a high-profile Southbank venue and everything that goes into making it work brilliantly.

This is a role for someone who loves events, understands venue operations and genuinely enjoys being at the centre of lots of moving parts.

You’ll work closely with the Director of Customer Experience & Commercial, helping shape how the venue operates and evolves, while personally making sure events are planned properly, information gets where it needs to go and nothing falls through the cracks.

There isn’t a big team underneath you. You’ll have support from production, technical and other internal teams, but this is very much a hands-on role for someone who likes owning the detail .

What you’ll be doing

You’ll sit at the intersection of venue operations, event delivery and internal coordination.

That will include

- Owning the planning and delivery of events and activations from start to finish
- Coordinating clients, production, technical teams, suppliers, catering and internal stakeholders
- Preparing detailed event information, run sheets, schedules and documentation
- Making sure requirements are communicated clearly across multiple teams
- Managing venue bookings and ensuring spaces are used effectively
- Being a key point of contact for internal teams using the venue
- Building strong relationships across the organisation and providing genuinely great internal service
- Managing suppliers and external partners involved in venue and event delivery
- Staying close to budgets, costs and the commercial side of venue activity

- Identifying practical opportunities to improve how the venue is used and how events are delivered
- Being onsite when required and calmly solving the inevitable things that come up in live environments

There is still a commercial element to the role. You’ll need to understand what makes an event commercially viable, recognise opportunities and be comfortable discussing venue hire and pricing. But this is not a heavy sales role or a position built around aggressive revenue targets .

A little about you

You’ll have built your experience in environments where events, clients, operations and logistics all come together, and where getting the detail right really matters.

You’re likely someone who is trusted to take ownership, keep everyone informed and make sure things actually happen. You’re just as comfortable thinking about the bigger picture as you are getting into a run sheet, following up a supplier or making sure another team has exactly what they need.

You’ll probably be someone who:

- Has strong experience delivering complex events or running venue operations
- Is exceptionally organised and naturally strong on detail
- Has excellent administration skills and follows things through properly
- Can juggle multiple events, stakeholders and deadlines without losing track of the small things
- Communicates clearly and knows how to keep different teams aligned
- Builds strong internal relationships and understands the importance of service inside an organisation, not just with external clients
- Is comfortable working independently and taking ownership

- Enjoys being hands-on rather than managing everything from a distance
- Understands hospitality, events and the expectations that come with a premium venue
- Has good commercial judgement, even if you haven’t spent your career carrying a sales target
- Stays calm when plans change or something unexpected happens five minutes before doors open

You don’t need to come from the arts. You do need to understand what it takes to deliver great events and experiences in an environment where the details matter.

What makes this prospect exciting?

There’s a lot to get your hands around.

You’ll be joining an organisation with an incredible brand, a unique Southbank venue and lots of different teams who rely on the space for events, activations and experiences.

There is room to improve systems, strengthen the way information flows across teams, build better ways of working and contribute ideas about how the venue can continue to evolve.

You’ll have genuine ownership without being left on an island. There are experienced production, technical and operational people around you, but you’ll be the person connecting many of those pieces together.

And because this is a live venue, no two weeks will look exactly the same.

The practical stuff

Salary: $105,000 + 12% super

Location: Southbank, Melbourne

Employment: Full-time permanent

Working style: Predominantly onsite due to the nature of the role and venue

There will naturally be some evening or weekend work associated with events, with relevant arrangements covered under the applicable enterprise agreement.

Sound like your kind of opportunity?

If you’re the person who notices the missing detail before anyone else does, loves bringing events to life and gets genuine satisfaction from making complicated things run smoothly, we’d love to hear from you.
