Kimberley Land Council

Broome

Kimberley Land Council is looking for an experienced program leader to help Traditional Owners establish the Mayala, Nimanburr and Jaru ranger groups. You will turn PBC and community aspirations into culturally directed, protected and sustainable programs - shaping Healthy Country Plans, ranger bases, work programs, recruitment and training from the outset.

Based in Broome, this role combines strategy with regular time in communities and on Country across the Kimberley. You will work alongside PBCs, Healthy Country Advisory Committees, communities, government and industry, backed by KLC expertise in fire, carbon, ecology, two-way science, training, business management and women’s ranger development.

Responsibilities

You will bring significant program leadership experience, strong knowledge of Indigenous land and sea management or community development, excellent cross-cultural communication and the confidence to manage partnerships, people and substantial budgets. Just as importantly, you will be ready to travel, camp and work in remote areas to support delivery on Country.

- Establish the Mayala, Nimanburr and Jaru ranger teams, including role design, recruitment, traineeships and ranger development.
- Partner with PBCs and Healthy Country Advisory Committees to design culturally directed ranger programs and annual work plans.
- Lead Healthy Country Planning and consultation on ranger bases, infrastructure, tenure and on-Country priorities.
- Support Traditional Owners and rangers to deliver approved work programs safely on Country.
- Coordinate training pathways with KLC and North Regional TAFE.
- Manage program reporting, contracts, budgets, procurement and compliance requirements.
- Build strong relationships with communities, project partners, funders, government and industry.
- Contribute as a senior member of the Land and Sea Management Unit and support the Kimberley Ranger Network.

Qualifications & Experience

- Significant knowledge and experience in Indigenous land and sea management, including developing or managing programs in partnership with Traditional Owners.
- A qualification in cultural natural resource management or a relevant field such as management, training or Indigenous community development.
- Demonstrated leadership of staff in remote, cross-cultural and multidisciplinary settings.
- Exceptional oral, interpersonal and written communication skills across diverse audiences.
- Strong program, contract, administrative, financial and budget management capability.
- Excellent organisation, sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities independently and as part of a team.
- A current C Class driver’s licence, with a manual licence preferred.
- Willingness to travel independently, camp in remote areas with limited amenities and support work programs on Country.
- Bring your leadership to Country. Help create the next generation of Kimberley ranger programs.
