Sydney

Hey! I’m Kaveh, Head of Engineering at Updoc. Everyone has a story about how messy healthcare is in Australia; and at Updoc we’re building the digital future of healthcare so it never has to be that way again.

There are too many cool things about working at Updoc to mention in one job ad, but I’ll try my best anyway! We’re profitable, we’re growing, we’re backed by leading Australian investors, we’ve won numerous awards for being one of the best places to work by our team (AFR Best Places to Work 2024 & 2025), and so much more.

Our small team is smart, skilled, and kind to each other. We don’t care about pedigree or buzzwords. We care about people that make us laugh, stay calm when things get tricky, bring their technical passions to work, and have rich lives outside the keyboard.

About the role

Engineering at Updoc handles the requirements of a high growth start-up and the security, privacy, and reliability requirements of the Australian health-tech industry.

As our business scales so does our need for excellence in engineering, and so do the opportunities for individual contributors to make a real impact to the lives of all Australians and people across the globe.

You’ll directly build tools and shape tele-health in a way that improves outcomes for tens of thousands of Aussie patients and doctors every week. At Updoc you'll be:

- Creating low-code prototypes to validate ideas quickly with the help of our product managers, low-code builders, clinical, legal, and broader teams.
- Designing reliable production-ready systems that make sure every medical outcome reaches the people that depend on them, all with the support of a solid team of senior engineers.
- Building meaningful systems with your team, end to end. If it exists, then someone depends on it for their health and wellbeing - so you’ll understand it, validate it, build it, and maintain it.
- Monitoring our data, apps, and infrastructure to surface problems, propose solutions, and deliver the ones that you think make the most impact.

Our tech stack

You’ll be working on a stack that has some conventional bits:

- Typescript servers, and browser clients
- Stock standard AWS cloud infrastructure
- Postgres databases

Plus some unconventional or uncommon bits you’ll be able to learn on the job:

- Low-code workflow automation tools
- Clojure servers
- Kafka

Your first week

- You’ll arrive to a new desk and device ready to be set up, with a clear onboarding guide.
- Each day you will spend time going through our engineering handbook, learning about our team norms, processes, rituals, and systems.

- You’ll be met by your own buddy who will introduce you to the team and help you remember names and faces so you’re not overwhelmed.
- The broader team will introduce themselves over the first few weeks to avoid overloading you with introductions, new names, and a recent workplace all at once.
- Your buddy will also walk you through our code and systems, helping you run the entire stack locally and ship your first PR on the first day (it’s not nearly as daunting as it sounds!).
- On Tuesday you’ll see our weekly company-wide sync and get a first view into our engineering project management cadence.
- You'll join us for a delicious lunch specially prepared by Song, our talented team chef. We'll make sure to ask about any dietary needs beforehand, your meal is perfectly tailored to you.
- Toward the end of each day we’ll run through stand-up to make sure everyone in the team knows what’s being worked on and is getting the support they need to get work done.

About you

- You’re even-keeled and resilient, you want real conversations with technical and non-technical alike.
- You enjoy solving interesting technical problems and worked hard to learn how to navigate them. Hard problems energise you rather than exhaust you.
- You feel you have strong engineering fundamentals; whether you love being a generalist, or prefer going deeper in one particular area.
- You're eager to grow within a collaborative team that supports each member while celebrating individual contributions.
- You have interests outside of code - we value the things that make you a complete person.
- You take pride in your work and are committed to continuous learning.

We’re growing quickly and looking for the right person to join the team, not the perfect resume. Apply and let us know why you want to join Updoc, and we’ll get back to you :)

Growth, support, and culture

At Updoc, we want our engineers to drive our culture through leadership, helping enthusiastically, and unlocking the Updoc team’s potential.

To help you achieve your goals we provide:

- Real ownership of initiative. You'll have a voice in project & product decisions, take on meaningful problems, and have the teams backing when you show your thinking.
- Peer sponsorship and support. We hire people we can trust, so when you join the team you can depend on the team to develop and back your ideas constructively.

- A high trust and collaboration environment. When something breaks, we fix it together. We debate outcomes, not egos.
- Celebrating wins and learning from losses. We celebrate successes as a team, and learn from our failures with safety and without blame as a team.

We’re building a team that reflects the diversity and value of the real world. We aren’t trying to tick every box, and we consider every candidate carefully for their individual merits.

If you’re from a background that’s under represented in tech we especially want to hear from you. We’d rather meet you and talk than miss out because you didn’t apply!

What’s in it for you

Beyond the table-stake perks you'll find everywhere else (company off-sites, office snacks, and relaxed Fridays) we pride ourselves on going above and beyond:

1. Tangible impact: gain self-fulfilment seeing your code empower better healthcare access across Australia.
2. Real Autonomy: Think, build, and iterate end to end. No micromanagement. High trust.
3. Genuine support: Grow with help from a kind, vibrant team that's invested in your success. Grow with the teams help, and help the team grow.
4. True Flexibility: Our team already balances family time, deep work, travel, work-life balance, unconventional hybrid work arrangements, and maintaining our tight-knit team dynamic - we make it work!
5. Exceptional food: Enjoy food cooked ****by our in-house chef Song (the ex-Canva head chef!). If you have dietaries, then get excited, he makes the best gluten free meals you’ll ever taste.
6. Equity participation: Share in our success through our equity scheme When we win, you win.
7. Competitive salary: Because perks don't pay the rent.

We’re always looking for sustainable ways to improve our company culture, this list grows with our success.

We asked Clio from the eng team why she likes working here, here's what she had to say:

- "At Updoc you get to see the whole picture of the business - it’s not just engineering. You work closely with customer experience, product managers, and the Partner Doctor success team."
- "You get to work with people who genuinely enjoy what they do."
- " Updoc creates a safe space for opinions and healthy debates."
- "I’m not stuck building what I’m told to build - the team actually values my feedback."
- "It’s an amazing learning opportunity. You become a full stack engineer: front-end, back-end, infra and dev-ops."
- "The company has a fast paced, motivated environment. You’re never bored."
- "Coffee breaks. It’s normal."
- "There are free lunches (that taste incredible!), so I don’t waste mental energy wondering what to eat or buy for lunch."
