Be Marsupial is an independent Australian design shop on Acland Street, St Kilda. Everything we sell carries original artwork made in-house — plush, stationery, homewares and gifts — and every purchase is wrapped with care. Customers often tell us the shop makes them happy. We'd love your help keeping it that way.

The role

You'll start as second-in-charge to one of our founders, who will train you in the shop, our products and the way we look after people. As your skills are signed off, you'll take on more of the day. The aim is for you to run the shop independently within one to three months, and later to help train new team members.

What you'll do

• Welcome everyone warmly, help when it's wanted, and let people browse in peace.

• Serve at the counter and wrap every purchase to our standard, even on busy days.

• Open and close the shop, use the POS and reconcile the day's takings.

• Receive and check stock, keep records accurate, and keep the shop tidy and inviting.

• Pick, pack and dispatch online orders, and prepare approved wholesale orders.

Buying, pricing and design stay with the founders.

What you'll bring

• At least two years of hands-on retail experience. 2IC, supervisor or senior sales experience is a plus.

• Experience opening and closing, handling payments and cash-ups, and receiving stock.

• Courteous, attentive service, including when it's busy or a customer is unhappy.

• Reliability, care with detail, and valuable judgement about when to ask for help.

• The right to work full-time in Australia.

Experience in gift, homewares,



design or tourism retail, with Shopify or Square, or speaking another language our visitors use would be welcome, but none of these is essential.

Hours

Permanent full-time, on a repeating four-week roster:

• Weeks 1–3: Wednesday to Sunday, 9 am–6 pm.

• Week 4: Wednesday and Thursday 9 am–6 pm, Friday 10 am–6 pm, with Saturday and Sunday off.

• Monday and Tuesday off every week.

Each day includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch and two paid 10-minute breaks. That's 152 hours every four weeks, an average of 38 a week. The early start is for stock, online orders and getting the shop ready before we open at 11.

Pay

General Retail Industry Award, Level 4: $29.45 an hour on weekdays, $36.81 on Saturdays and $44.18 on Sundays, plus super. That's about $65,500 a year on this roster. Once you're running the shop you move to the manager rate (Level 6, currently $31.11 an hour base), about $69,200 a year. Public-holiday rates apply when you work a public holiday.
