A growing Australian deep tech company is strengthening its embedded engineering organisation and is now hiring an Embedded Software Manager to set the technical direction and ways of working for the firmware at the core of its products.
In this role you will lead embedded software across two engineering teams of around 10 engineers in total, taking technical ownership of how firmware is designed, written, reviewed and delivered. The work is bare metal firmware for low power microcontrollers with tens of kilobytes of memory and little or no operating system, running a lightweight in house scheduler alongside growing use of Zephyr, with low level drivers and interfaces to sensors and other hardware. This is resource constrained development rather than embedded Linux, so every design decision carries a real cost in memory and power. The two teams bring complementary strengths, one drawing on communications engineers who write firmware and the other on embedded software engineers with deep knowledge of microcontroller and hardware constraints, and this role brings those strengths together under one consistent engineering practice. You will define what valuable embedded software looks like, set the standards and development processes the teams work to, shape how source control, code review and issue tracking are used, and make the key technical decisions on firmware architecture and implementation. Equally important is how you lead: setting direction with enough technical depth to earn the respect of experienced engineers and explaining the reasoning behind each decision so that engineers understand it and take ownership of it, rather than leading by instruction alone.
This calls for genuine technical authority rather than a management style that leaves technical decisions to others. It suits someone who is still energised by low level firmware and the hardware it runs on, who enjoys developing engineers and shaping how a team works, and who wants real influence over products in active development. The ideal background is one shaped by shipping low power, resource constrained embedded products while leading or setting direction for other engineers, rather than a career centred on embedded Linux, application software or purely administrative management.
This is a full time, Adelaide based role and because the role works so closely with both engineering teams, most of the week is expected to be spent on site. Candidates must already hold the right to work in Australia, as visa sponsorship is not available for this position. For interstate candidates, relocation is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own embedded software practice across two engineering teams, defining the standards, design principles and development processes they work to.
- Stay close to the code, reviewing firmware design and implementation for low power microcontroller devices and guiding decisions on drivers, sensor interfaces and resource use.
- Make the key technical decisions on firmware architecture and implementation,
explaining the reasoning clearly so that engineers understand and commit to the direction.
- Establish consistent use of source control, code review and issue tracking so that work is visible, consistent and easier to maintain.
- Lead, mentor and develop engineers across both teams, growing technical capability and a shared engineering culture.
- Represent embedded software in discussions with hardware, systems and product colleagues across the business.
Requirements:
- Degree in computer, electrical or electronic engineering, software engineering, computer science or a related discipline.
- Extensive hands on experience developing bare metal firmware in C for low power, resource constrained microcontrollers, including low level drivers and sensor and hardware interfacing.
- Demonstrated experience leading embedded software engineers and setting technical direction, whether as a manager, team lead or principal engineer.
- Strong influencing and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly and bring engineers from different technical backgrounds with you.
- Experience defining and embedding software development processes, coding standards, code review and version control practice across a team.
Desirable but not essential:
- Experience with Zephyr or another RTOS, as well as lightweight or custom schedulers.
- Background in wireless or communications engineering, or experience working closely with communications engineers on embedded products.
- Experience establishing engineering standards and practices across more than one team.
