Ecologist – Flora, Fauna & Field Surveys
Red Sand Ecology | South East Queensland
Casual | $40–$55 per hour + super | Potential full-time opportunity
Red Sand Ecology is seeking an Ecologist with at least three years of relevant experience to assist with ecological surveys, fauna management and environmental project delivery across Queensland and Recent South Wales.
The role will involve a combination of flora and fauna surveys, vegetation assessments, habitat inspections, pre-clearing activities and reporting.
We are looking for someone who has a genuine interest in ecology as a whole and is willing to work across different disciplines.
While you may have a particular interest in fauna, ecological consulting involves more than working with your preferred species. Vegetation communities, plant identification and habitat assessments are equally important in understanding the environment and informing project planning, impact assessments and conservation outcomes.
Some projects will involve several consecutive days undertaking vegetation surveys in hot and physically demanding conditions. Others may involve targeted fauna surveys, pre-clearing inspections or construction-phase environmental management.
The work is varied, and we expect our ecologists to be willing to contribute wherever their skills are needed, while continuing to develop their knowledge and experience.
Key responsibilities
- Flora and fauna surveys, including species identification and habitat assessments.
- Vegetation surveys, regional ecosystem verification and plant identification.
- Pre-clearing inspections and fauna management activities.
- Weed and biosecurity assessments.
- Field data collection, mapping and GIS.
- Preparation of field records, survey reports and supporting technical documentation.
- Assisting with the planning, coordination and delivery of environmental projects.
- Working alongside other ecologists and environmental professionals across different project stages.
Essential requirements
- Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
- Minimum three years of relevant experience. Experience gained during university, including placements and practical fieldwork, will be considered.
- Some demonstrated experience in environmental consulting or ecological project delivery.
- Working knowledge of fauna and native plant identification.
- Construction White Card.
- Current driver's licence and four-wheel-drive experience.
- Competency in Microsoft Office and GIS software, preferably QGIS or ArcGIS.
- Ability to undertake physically demanding fieldwork, including extended periods outdoors in hot conditions.
- Willingness to travel and undertake regional or remote fieldwork.
- Good communication, field recording and report-writing skills.
Experience in fauna spotter-catching, BioCondition assessments, protected plant surveys, regional ecosystem mapping or construction environmental management will be highly regarded.
Employment conditions
The position will initially be offered on a casual basis, with the opportunity to progress to full-time employment.
The casual hourly rate will be $40–$55 per hour plus superannuation, depending on qualifications, experience and demonstrated competency.
Applying
Please provide your resume and a brief cover letter outlining your experience in flora and fauna surveys, vegetation assessment and environmental project delivery.
We are looking for ecologists who want to understand the bigger picture, not simply complete a survey and submit a dataset. You should be interested in why a task is being undertaken, what you are assessing and how your findings will inform project decisions. You do not need to have every answer, but you must be willing to ask questions, learn and develop that understanding.
This role involves a broad range of ecological assessments and project work. If you are seeking a position focused exclusively on one species, discipline or survey type, it is unlikely to be the right fit.
We are particularly interested in understanding the types of projects you have worked on, your level of responsibility and the areas in which you would like to further develop your skills.
