We are a busy and respected criminal law practice based in Canberra, ACT, appearing regularly in the ACT Magistrates Court and Supreme Court. Our firm is committed to providing strategic, client-focused representation across all areas of criminal law.

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and capable Criminal Defence Lawyer with experience in ACT criminal procedure. The successful candidate will manage a varied caseload and regularly appear in court.

Key Responsibilities

- Appear in the ACT Magistrates Court for mentions, pre-hearing mentions, bail applications, sentencing and defended hearings.

- Manage criminal files from commencement to resolution

- Draft court documents, submissions, and correspondence

- Instruct counsel in Supreme Court trials and run non-complex hearings

- Provide clear, practical legal advice to clients

- Engage in negotiations with prosecutors

Essential Criteria

- Admitted as a legal practitioner in the ACT (or eligible for admission)





- Experience appearing in the Magistrates Court

- Demonstrated experience in bail applications, sentencing, defended hearings.

- Ability to conduct bail applications, sentencing and defended hearings independently without supervision

- Strong advocacy and courtroom skills

- Ability to manage files independently

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail

Desirable

- 2+ years PAE in criminal law (preferred but not essential for the right candidate)

- Experience instructing counsel in trial matters

- Familiarity with ACT criminal procedure and evidence law
